It was Christmas Eve. The boys had just come back from the mandatory company party. Heechul, who drank way more than he should have, collapsed onto the couch in the living room. Ryeowook, seeing the state his hyung was in and wanting to have some fun, plopped himself down besides the drunken man.
“Heechul-hyung,” Ryeowook began, “what’s the real meaning of Christmas?”
Hearing Ryeowook’s question, Heechul attempted to straighten himself up on the couch but failed and just slumped down further.
“The real meaning of Christmas, you ask?” Heechul managed to slur out before throwing his arm around Ryeowook’s shoulders and dragging him down next to him.
Ryeowook, now completely amused, replied, “Yes, hyung, the real meaning of Christmas.”
“Well…Wook,” Heechul said, “the real point to this here holiday is, of course…” He lifted his hand and pointed to another part of the room. “That,” he said decisively.
Ryeowook turned his head, eyes following where Heechul’s finger was pointed. There was nothing in the corner of the room that Heechul referred to besides an old potted plant.
“The real meaning of Christmas is a ficus?” Ryeowook asked.
Almost falling asleep after he pointed, Heechul struggled to keep his eyes open. “What? Isn’t that the Christmas tree?” he asked Ryeowook.
Ryeowook lifted his finger and pointed to the corner opposite of the one Heechul pointed to. “No, hyung, that’s the Christmas tree.” He pointed to a magnificent evergreen, covered in sparkling lights.
Heechul looked to the corner and said, “Oh, so it is. Well, there’s the real meaning of Christmas - the PRESENTS.”
Ryeowook shook his head, expecting this answer from his hyung. “Are you sure about that, Heechul-hyung?”
Heechul exaggeratedly nodded his head a few times and then stopped when he noticed how bad of a headache he had.
“Yes, absolutely sure,” he said. “What else could it be? On Christmas, everyone is essentially obligated to give you a present, whether they like you or not. So, you always wind up with a nice haul.”
“That works out wonderfully for you, doesn’t it, hyung?” Ryeowook said quietly to himself.
Not hearing him, Heechul continued, “The presents are the BEST part of Christmas, Wook. The best…” Heechul’s voice trailed off, and he fell over on the couch. He had somehow managed to fall asleep in the middle of his sentence.
Thoroughly amused, Ryeowook decided not to wake his hyung up and went off to his own room.
“The best…”
