The first semester of your sophomore year of college was over. It was finally July and summer break was here. It was about 12 in the afternoon, and you were still lying in bed, enjoying the fact that you didn’t have to rush off to class any time soon. Besides, you had stayed out late last night, celebrating the end of the semester with some of the guys from the dance team. It wouldn’t be so bad if you stayed in bed a bit longer, right?

“Taemin-ah,” your mom called from downstairs. “Someone’s here to see you!”

With a groan, you threw your blanket off from on top of you and lazily sat up in bed. However, before you even had a chance to stretch, there was a knock on your door.

“Uh, come in?” you say, not knowing who it could possibly be.

“What, are you still in bed?” said the person opening your door with a hint of disapproval in their voice.

When you heard the voice, you immediately jumped out of bed. “Minho?!”

You and Minho had been friends for as long as you could remember. Since you were both still in elementary school, you had spent just about every day together. That’s why when he left for college, it seemed as though you would never be able to adjust to going about life with him not there.

“Minho, what are you doing here?” you asked him while throwing your arms around him for a hug. “I didn’t think you were coming home until next month!”

Grinning, he responded, “Well, I didn’t think so either, at first, but I moved some things around, and here I am!”

You noticed that he was holding a brightly-colored shopping bag, so naturally, you asked, “What’s in the bag?”

“You didn’t think I’d forget, would you?”

“Forget what?”

Shaking his head, Minho put his hand on your shoulder, “Don’t tell me you forgot your own birthday...”

It’s not that you had forgotten your birthday. It’s just that you weren’t expecting anything for it. For the past few years, you hadn’t really done much. Not since Minho left for college. When you were both still in high school, he had always taken the time to plan some elaborate surprise for you. He would steal your phone to find out who you called and texted the most and invited them to whatever celebration he had in mind. Minho nearly always spoiled the surprise himself though because whenever it was a week or so before your birthday, he’d always get just a little bit stranger than he usually was. You’d make an offhand comment about it, hyung, you’re acting weird, and then he’d get frantic and defensive, somehow spilling all the details of his plan in the process. You’d wind up laughing at him and just playing along when it came time for the surprise. You figured, it’s the thought that counts.

Since Minho’s been at college, you’ve just spent your birthdays at home with your family. Your mom would buy a birthday cake and make you seaweed soup, but otherwise, it was pretty much just like any other day.

“Really? A person doesn’t forget their own birthday. Anyway, you didn’t answer. What’s in the bag?” you asked again while constantly poking him in the arm.

“Later,” he replied. “Let’s go eat cake first! I left it downstairs.”

Looking at him skeptically, you said, “I’m not sure it’s a good idea to have cake first thing in the morning...”

“Well, good. Because it’s not morning anymore,” Minho responded, pointing at the clock on your nightstand.

Frowning, you started pushing him out of your room. “Ugh, fine, just let me change out of my pyjamas.”

“Don’t get mad at me! You’re the one that decided to sleep in until the afternoon.”

“I know, I know.”

-----

You didn’t get to see Minho very much these days, so whenever you two did have the chance to spend time together, you made sure every minute was worth it. But, at those times when you two just couldn’t think of anything else to do, you’d pull out your old kite from the closet, and the two of you would go to the local park and reminisce about old times.

Old times like that one day when you were eight, and you slipped and fell on the sidewalk, ripping your knee open, and Minho had to piggyback you home.

Or the time you needed another player on your team for pick-up soccer and Minho was the only one around. About how he wound up surprising everyone with his athletic ability by scoring the only goal of the day.

One of you might even bring up how you had given Minho the silent treatment for a whole week after he told you he was going away for college. Hey, you were young and naive. You thought it’d make him reconsider!

However you two spent your time together, it always managed to make every minute you spent apart seem insignificant in the end.

“So, I ask again! And you know I won’t stop until you answer. What’s in the bag?”

“Close your eyes.”

“Seriously?”

“Do you want to know what it is or not?”

“If you insist!” you declared, squeezing your eyes shut and holding your hands out.

Minho placed a small, rectangular box in your hands. Opening it, you saw a bright yellow coffee mug inside. Lifting the mug out of the box, you saw that it had tiny shoe prints painted all over the outside.

“Minho, this is awesome,” you told him as you admired the mug, holding it up and turning it around in your hands.

“I’m glad you like it,” he said with a smile, “I got one for myself, too.” Opening the other box that was in the bag, he showed you a similar mug, midnight blue, painted with tiny airplanes.

Taking Minho’s mug, you held both up to the light and compared them. When you set them back down in your lap, rather than giving him back the mug with the airplanes, you gave him the one that he had originally given to you.

Without protest, he simply took it in his hands and said softly, “Happy birthday, Taemin.”
