“Quinnie! How are you baby?”
Quinn shook her head at Rachel’s greeting. “Too soon,” she muttered, blushing as the extras who were on set that day and had been milling around them all turned and stared, “but I’m well, thank you. How are you?”
Rachel blinked in disbelief. “That is the most civilized tone of voice you’ve ever used in my presence! This relationship thing is working out well.”
“Well,” Quinn responded, “I’ve learned a lot today. I’m trying to be more like Dianna, you know. She totally exhibits all of those good Christian values I claim to have.”
“You do know she’s a Jew, right?”
Quinn’s eyes widened as her mouth hung open. “I never would have guessed. She has such fantastic morals and a truly generous heart.”
Rachel frowned. “You do know I’m a Jew, right?”
Quinn rolled her eyes in response. “Only because you remind us of that and your two gay dads every chance you get. But nobody ever told me about Dianna.”
“That’s because you were supposed to do the research on your own. I provided you with a list of accurate and informative websites for a reason, Quinn!”
“I’m sorry, is it so unbelievable that I thought this would all turn into further evidence I could use to mock you for your crazy? You told me we were going to fall through a television and into another world, and I was supposed to believe you? Seriously?”
“Point taken. My sincerest apologies. Are we okay? I’d hate to have a big fight on our first day as a couple.”
Quinn nodded. “We’re okay. “ She grabbed Rachel’s arm and pulled her around the corner and away from the prying eyes of the extras before pressing a kiss to her lips. “Is this okay?”
Rachel stifled a moan before gently putting her hands on Quinn’s shoulders and pushing her away. “As much as I’ve come to adore kissing you, I must inform you that now is not really an appropriate time. I’m hard at work here, Quinn, there’s still too much at stake!”
“But Lea and Dianna both got called up to meet with the directors. Can’t we take a break since they’re busy?”
“Oh, they’re busy,” Lea confirmed, wiggling her eyebrows for effect. “But we’re still on duty.”
“I really don’t understand you sometimes. All the time, really. I’m not even entirely sure why I find myself attracted to you.” Quinn sighed. “What are you talking about?”
“Are you ready for this?” Rachel asked, grinning. “My plan is pretty genius.”
Quinn was pretty sure that if she didn’t already have the eyebrow raise and accompanying eye roll down, she would have mastered it that day.
“It wasn’t the directors that called for Lea and Dianna at all. It was me!”
“Okay…?”
“I made sure they got in the elevator together on the way up to the meeting, and then I messed with the wiring so it got stuck between floors!”
“Rachel! How could you do that? That’s just cruel. And isn’t it kind of counterproductive to our mission? And how do you know how to do electrical work anyways?”
“I do research, Quinn. And of course it’s not counterproductive. How do we expect Lea to realize her love for Dianna if they’re not sequestered together for an extended period of time.”
“Realize her love for Dianna? What are you talking about?” Quinn took a few deep breaths in an unsuccessful attempt to quell her anger. “They’re supposed to become friends so Lea will stay on the show and everything will be fine and we can go back to normal! And now maybe you’ve ruined any chance we have of getting out of here! Thanks a lot!”
“God, Quinn,” Rachel raised her voice to match. “Did you not read the plan either? We have to get them together, they’ll both obviously be happier that way and we want them happy so we can go home and be together! Seriously, Quinn, I didn’t realize you were such a moron!”
“I’m the moron? Really, Berry, you think I’m the moron? You can’t be serious, this is just ridiculous. I’m leaving, I can’t do this right now.” She turned to leave but stopped when Rachel continued yelling.
“No! You don’t get to just walk out on me, that isn’t how this relationship is going to work!”
“Relationship, really? You think we still have a relationship? You just called me a moron!”
“Yeah, like you’ve never called me any names. Right, Quinn. I think the first time you ever called me Rachel was like thirty seconds ago when you were screaming at me!”
“You’re seriously psychotic! You trapped two girls in an elevator!”
“And I’m glad I did because you were trying to keep them apart! Who do you think you are, Jenna?”
“What the hell, Berry?”
“Never mind, you wouldn’t understand. I forgot that you didn’t visit any of the websites on the approved list I painstakingly made. Maybe we should be over, you clearly don’t believe in the power of love. Maybe you’re not good enough for me after all.”
“I clearly do believe in the power of love! I came out for you, you…jerkface!”
“Really, Quinn? That’s the best you’ve got? I’m ashamed to have ever been with someone with such a lacking vocabulary.”
“Yeah, you’re just that much of a narcissist you can only love someone just like you. Don’t think I didn’t see you checking out Lea earlier! I know you think she’s hot, admit it!”
“I will and I do! For goodness sakes, Quinn, have you seen her legs?”
“I’ve seen your legs, you short little freak. Same thing. I’m going now, I’m over this. And you!”
“Fine, Quinn! You do that! Run away like the scared little girl I know you are!” And as she watched Quinn leave, Rachel fell to her knees, leaned back against the doors of the stuck elevator, and sobbed.

When she woke up that morning, Lea had prepared herself to have a bad day. Her publicist had called her in the middle of the night to warn her about what was happening and to plan the meeting for the morning. She figured she’d have to explain herself to her cast, and especially Dianna, but she planned to do that gently and carefully, and preferably in a public place, just in case. So when she’d got stuck in an elevator with Dianna on their way to a meeting with Ryan, Ian, and Brad, who wanted to address the rumors, no doubt, her already awful day seemed about to take a turn for the worse. Though she never expected she’d be saying it, Lea was actually glad to be stuck in an unmoving elevator with a girl who had every reason to hate her.
“How long has it been?” Dianna asked eventually, breaking the silence that had hung over them since Lea had first apologized and explained that the rumors were just that and not based in truth. Dianna had forgiven her, of course, because she’s Dianna and that’s just how she is, but it hadn’t done anything to alleviate the awkwardness between the two. Lea could tell Dianna was trying to be friendly to her, but she was clearly uncomfortable and something still wasn’t right with them.
“I don’t know, I left my phone in the trailer. A few hours if I had to guess.”
“Don’t you think they would have come looking for us by now? I mean, we’re supposed to be at a meeting with a whole bunch of people. They should have noticed we’re not there.”
“I’m sure they’ll get here, Di. They probably had to call the fire department or something, but they’ll get us out of here soon. There’s no show without us.”
Dianna raised an eyebrow. “From what I heard I on tv last night, there might be no show, period.”
“I don’t know,” Lea sighed. “What were you doing watching tv anyways? You never do that.”
“The Biggest Loser was on,” Dianna shrugged. “I guess I was kind of just in the mood for the inspiration or something.”
“We always used to watch that together,” Lea smiled, bumping her shoulder against Dianna’s from where they were sitting leaned up against the elevator’s wall. “Did you miss me or something?” she asked, grinning.
“Maybe I did,” Dianna responded, attempting to hide her blush.
Both girls were lost in contemplation for a moment before Lea broke the silence. “Di, why have you been pushing me away? It’s not all in my head, I know it.”
“I’m not…” Dianna began, unsure exactly what she wanted to say. “Lea, it’s not like that, not really.”
“Just tell me it’s not in my head. You at least owe me that.”
“It’s not all in your head,” Dianna answered, her voice barely above a whisper.
------------
“Hey!” Heather said in greeting as Rachel stomped past her. “Have you seen Di?”
“She’s busy,” Rachel responded curtly, folding her arms across her chest to signal that she was not in the mood to talk.”
“Ooookay,” Heather answered sarcastically. “I’m so glad to see you’re all bright and shiny this evening.”
“It’s not my fault my ex-girlfriend is a moron.”
“Oh yeah!” Heather exclaimed. “I heard you and Quinn finally got your act together. Congr - “ The glare that Rachel shot her stopped the words on her lips. “Right,” she continued. “Uh…sorry.”
Rachel rolled her eyes. “Never mind that. If you see Finn, tell him to meet me in the choir room. We’re going home.”
“Will do,” Heather nodded. “I’ll let Quinn know too so you, uh, don’t have to.”
“Don’t bother,” Rachel responded. “You can keep her.”
Heather’s eyes widened. “You’re serious?” she asked after a moment. “We can’t keep her, she’s not a homeless puppy who wandered onto our set. She’s a person! Or a character, or something. I don’t know, I don’t really understand it. But she can’t stay here, you have to take her back with you.”
“Let her find her own way then,” Rachel muttered before storming off. “I’m through with her nonsense.”
---------------
Maybe it was the lack of fresh air in the elevator. Lea had no idea how long she and Dianna had been stuck inside, but it had clearly been long enough that the lack of oxygen in the small box was starting to impact her brain functioning. She’d always loved Dianna, they were best friends even despite their latest bump in the road, she hoped anyway, but at some point several hours into their stay in the stuck elevator, Lea began to think about Dianna in a different way. When the blonde had eventually fallen asleep leaning up against Lea’s side with her head resting on her shoulder, Lea could hardly fight the feeling she had of wanting to wrap an arm around Dianna’s shoulders and press a soft kiss to the top of her head.
It had to have been Rachel’s fault. All day she’d been praising Dianna’s virtues, constantly reminding Lea of not only her friend’s physical beauty, but her amazing personality as well. And now Lea was having visions of a future that not only included Oscars, Tonys, Grammys, and Emmys, but also a handful of children with beautiful hazel eyes, trips to Disney World, and waking up next to Dianna every morning.
And then the realization hit her like a ton of bricks. She loved Dianna. Loved. It wasn’t a new feeling, not really, somewhere in her unconscious mind she knew she always had. But this was it; her entire future was hanging in the balance and waiting to take off in an elevator that was, well, not going anywhere. She wasn’t sure she liked the symbolism.
“Dianna,” she said after a moment, gently shaking the other girl to wake her up. “Dianna, I need to tell you something.”
“Are we rescued yet?” Dianna mumbled, wiping a hand across her face to help wake her up. “I knew the fire department would come.”
Lea smiled at Dianna’s barely awake optimism, wondering how she could have spent so many years pushing down the fuzzy feeling that started somewhere around her heart and radiated outward until her whole body was buzzing when Dianna smiled back at her. “I think I’m in love with you,” Lea said.
And before Dianna even had a chance to formulate a sentence in her head, any response was effectively stopped when Lea’s soft lips pressed firmly yet gently against her own.
