...you keep me comin' home again...

Hey everyone who is off at college, hangin' on Portland, or somewhere in between. And people not on this spectrum. Pretty much everyone who's gonna read this, I guess.

How's it going? It's been a good couple months since I even thought about livejournal, and I figure, if I don't wanna totally drop off the face of the planet, I should probably update you guys a little bit as to what I've been up to.

As of this semester, I've started to write poetry. I signed up for this really cool class called "The Writing of Poetry," and it's got me really excited about poetry as well as writing in general. I don't really know what I'm doing when it comes to poetry, as I haven't gotten into the habit of reading many poets, so I don't really have any good examples. That said, this class has really opened up the way I thought about poetry, and has helped me open up some of my own creative avenues in terms of writing. On a related note, I joined a group of kids (including amy wilson! amy, how do you feel about this zine, thing?) here at Umich who are interested in starting up a zine. I'm super excited about it, hopefully, it'll help me get back into the habit of writing all the time.
On a related note, I'm starting to really feel like art is a serious business. Not that whatever you create, be it through writing, singing/music, acting, drawing, or whatever has to be a "precious" piece of art, or that it has to be a "serious" creation, or that it even has to be "good." (I mean, there are so many standards of "good" out there, it's impossible to know which one to follow) All I mean is that I'm starting to see art as something worth devoting a serious amount of effort to. It's worth spending a lot of time working on a poem, or a story...not to make something that other people will like, but something you like. Something satisfying. It's a good thought, I think. In my case, I've been devoting a lot of attention to practicing guitar, writing, working on becoming a better singer through my voice class, a better actor through various theater related things I've been doing, etc. I really don't know what I want to major in.
I'm also obsessed with music. I don't know if you remember me being really into music back in high school (you probably do), but I spend a hell of a lot of time listening to music, reading about music, thinking about music...etc. I'm really excited for the summer, because I'm heading to the Pitchfork Music Festival in Chicago!! 40+ Bands!!
I was going to go to the Sasquatch festival in washington, but it was hella expensive, and there were only a few bands I really wanted to see. Admittedly, I had to buy plane tickets for chicago, but the difference between prices of the festivals, as well as the opening band* of the pitchfork festival, as well as the fack that I'll be hanging out with my girlfriend at the festival while I'm there definately makes up for the price difference. I've been picking up a bunch of extra shifts (I work in the cafeteria in my quad here, which is awesome. You wouldn't think so, for a food service job in a college dorm. You'd think it'd be gross, and tedious, and smelly, but it's none of those things!)

* The opening band for Pitchfork is Sonic Youth, and they will be playing the entirety of their album Daydream Nation live!! Sonic Youth is either my favorite band, or second favorite band (to pavement, if that's the case), and Daydream Nation is for sure my favorite album. So I'm pretty psyched.

After the Festival, Kaitlin (my gf) is gonna be visiting portland for a week, which is exciting.

What else?
In a recent, bizarre, stressful turn of events and election, I am now the Vice President of the student government of the RC (residential college), the RC Republic. Kind of exciting. There are a lot of things I want to do here, and I never want to be involved with politics. I'm pretty sure about that last one.

I performed in a couple plays recently:
Lysistrata - ancient greek sex comedy, heavily modernized, I played a woman with large breasts. An experience.
Curse of the Starving Class - Sam Shepherd, Family Tragedy, it was awesome. Possibly favorite role, ever.

Looking at joining an Improv troupe next year.

Been running regularly. It's a new thing. My favorite run was when it was 7 degrees outside. Boy, do I love layers!

Potential next semester invovles an american culture class on what it means to "be an american", music theory courses, a voice course, a creative writing course (narration?), a class on sexuality, and more!!

Possible majors - Creative Writing. with a music minor. Music?

I've always thought people can do whatever they want to/are interested in, but I'm only just now starting to feel like it's true.
