Wow, they sure require a lot of information... passport number? Credit reference beyond bank? Other incomes, RRSPs and Investments? I really do not think they need all this information to make a decision. Some of this is quite private info that in my opinion, a landlord really does not need to know about ( Read more... )

Some Landlords can be Bruuutal that way.
I've looked at some places that I liked a lot and walked away because I felt that the information they were asking for was more than a little over the top.

Passport number though. Haven't seen that yet. Ridiculous.

Most landlord guides suggest asking for these for two reasons.

1) Doing a credit check is becoming more normal now. You need some of this info to do that.

2) Tracking down wayward tenants who skip out with unpaid rent becomes easier if you have all of that info, including the passport number.

They'll ask for information that is totally illegal for them to ask for; I've seen rental applications that ask for a SIN. All the better to steal a prospective tenant's identity, I suppose.
