Air Conditioner Thoughts

Jul 29, 2009 12:40

Hey all,

This is an Inquiry to those who have lived in hotter places than here.

What should I look for in an air conditioner? Is the free standing type better that the window mount units? How loud are they? what sorts of prices should I look at for a good one that will last one season to the next?

Thoughts?

I've only used the window mount kind, and it worked pretty well, but mounting it into the window was kind of a pain, because you needed to mount board around it to make sure it stayed there. But it did work well.

Another issue is that it'll only work in that one room. If a free-standing one works well, you might want to try that. Then you could move it into whatever room you're in...sitting in the living room, or the bedroom for cool sleeping.

I don't know anything about free standing vs window mounts, but I do know that you have to look very carefully at the square footage area that the box claims it can "oool". A friend of mine believes that she blew hers out (window mounted)after 1 season because her bedroom was bigger than the output of the machine.

I love the water chilled fans! I don't think we could survive this hot apartment without them. The nice thing is that the reservoir can also take an ice pack or two to add an extra bit of cool air. And they are a bit cheaper and easier than air conditioners (especially since our apartment doesn't allow air conditioners).
