This recipe is descended from the 1942 edition of the Woman's Home Companion Cook Book. Really, if you ever find this particular cookbook, it's worth its weight in gold. See, now, I use paper liners and have no trouble with them. If you make the recipe strictly the way dad does, then they do stick. Like they've been put on with wallpaper paste. But with the extra moisture I don't have any trouble. Also, I don't use maple syrup, I use blueberry syrup. Oh, but I still make it with the shortening, does that make a difference in the sticky factor?

Dunno. I remember having so much difficulty with the paper cups that I simply didn't bother even as I changed the recipe. I did use a full third cup of maple syrup and think the batter could still probably stand to have more moisture. Thing is, I'm rapidly becoming disinterested in paper liners all the way around. I have far fewer issues if I simply spray the muffin pans with oil or grease them.

ETA: If someone were to want to use shortening the original recipe calls for 2 Tbs. I use individual serving cups of applesauce for baking and rather than be particular as to quantity, I pour in the whole thing so as not to waste any. And the cups come in half cup portions...
