I know that I am an avid, and by that I mean I have two sweaters, three pairs of regular length socks, two or four(I honestly can't remember) pairs of knee or over the knee socks, a few hats and a few pairs of mittens and a lace shawl on the needles, as well as a skirt or two, and more bobbins on my four spinning

Anyway, I've been thinking a lot about getting more into sewing. Would you recommend taking a class, or could I get by reading a book? Also, do you have a recommendation of a sewing machine that's good for beginners?

I don't really use patterns, though; lately I've been doing a lot of freestyle stuff. It's fine, because it's generally for hats and legwarmers and stuff, and those are pretty straightforward. I'm scared to death to tackle sweaters because of the shaping.
And I just bought a new camera TODAY (!!!!), so I'll be sure to post some of the things I'm working on.
