Update on moi:
I've been absent. Working hard on a new story. At first I was just going to work on it while I sent my other one out, and now … I'm really into this one! I've gathered the courage to attempt a female perspective - and its very hard so it's sucking a lot of my time. But good. I

You are correct about the sales tax. When I lived in Chicago between the city, county and state sales taxes, I was paying 10 cents in tax on top of every dollar I spent. Here in Indiana, I only have a state sales tax of 7 cents on top of every dollar spent.
To complicate things further, there are some states that have no sales tax, and some where things like groceries or clothes are exempt. I've pretty much come to the conclusion that this is the states way of confusing the hell out of each other.
Despite the crazy taxes, I hope you enjoy your trip.

Yes, state-to-state a price on something varies. Most states hover between 4 and 7%. I remember when Iowa increased from 5 to 6 - people were so angry. Iowa has 6% sales tax on all non-food items (soda is taxed, restaurants and fast food joints are taxable). If you buy $100 worth of, say, perfume you'll pay $106. Minnesota doesn't have sales tax on clothing, we like to invade come school time lol. New York was really high and shocking when I went there. Kind of like, no thanks, I won't buy anything while I'm here EVER -- because there's a maximum local surtax on top the 4% state tax.
Gasoline has taxes rolled into the price, which is good. If I filled my tank for $30 and found out I had to pay 8% sales tax I'd be so goddamn angry.
It's good to hear about your writing, I hope she keeps speaking to you.

It just appears on our receipts, right down the bottom, the products themselves have the tax incl on the price

Thanks for the gift, Inca. It gave me a nostalgic feeling, like back in the day. It was great.
It's wonderful you are stretching yourself. I'm working on and off on a YA novel, so I get that.
