A drabble for you, nonnie, because this prompt called out to me. (And thanks for taking me back to my roots with this one; I hadn't written a drabble in ages and I missed it.)

we all fall down

Mal’s death upended everything.

I fled with Dom, after, but now between us is the empty space where she used to be.

The change, the loss, feels like a tipping point, as though I’ve leaned back on two legs in a chair, nearly fallen, and only just caught myself. I feel perpetually off-balance.

Dom asks, sometimes, why I stay. I shrug; we’re both unused to these conversations. But the truth is, I stay because I know he feels the same.

I’m all that’s keeping him balanced, and that’s reason enough.

But I wonder how long we have before we fall.
