The Ships Of Inception

So, this comm pretty much went dead and as the mod I take full responsibility. No real excuse except lack of Internet time and focus turning to other fandoms, and for that I apologize. But, at any rate, I'm going to try and get it running again, so here's a new discussion topic.

Shipping.

Yeah, not the safest of things to discuss, but it's an ( Read more... )

Let me start off my own shipping discussion with the caveat that I generally don't have slasher goggles. It isn't putting down the slash out there, it's just that I don't as a rule see it unless you point it out to me. I'm kinda dense that way. That means by default I tend to be a het shipper ( ... )

I have a (only vaguely thought-out) theory that shipping preferences tend to be set pretty early. I know my first ships were Han/Leia and Paris/B'Elanna, and that dynamic - snarky, combative, sometimes slightly resentful of loving each other - is a dynamic I love. Which links in to why I ship Arthur/Eames.

I think this point has merit; Han/Leia was a ship of mine before I knew what shipping was, as well as Ron/Hermione (though that is a much more contentious one). So my snark!ship preference was set early, same as you, and one of my ships is A/E.

Ironically, the ship that's now my OTP happens to be a pair that I never originally considered: Ariadne/Eames. I always thought I would eventually fall hard for Cobb/Ariadne and/or Arthur/Ariadne, but yeah - that really hasn't happened. I do like both of those pairs, but the more I watched the film, the more intrigued I was by the idea of Ariadne/Eames over them. I know it seems strange, considering they barely shared any scenes in the movie, but still - I managed to get something out of that. Also, after staring hard enough, I found enough AriEames 'moments' to satisfy me, *lol ( ... )

This is just my opinion here as shipping is so personal. I currently ship A/A/E and Arthur/Mal, and I'll explain how I got there over time.

I sort of occupy a weird/interesting place with regards to shipping, especially because I lean so heavily on gen fic as a rule. That is, I do have characters have feelings for each other, but it serves the plot rather than is the plot.

As for my ship of choice, it started off as Arthur/Eames and Arthur/Ariadne. I chose to write Arthur/Eames fic mostly because I was actually very pleased to see a character who could be construed as gay or bisexual (Eames) who was not a flaming stereotype, but not Virtually Straight in behavior, who was also a complete and utter badass.

At the same time I also noticed a certain tendency to just assume Arthur and Eames were already banging, when the movie's subtext really does not imply it. Snarky flirting, yes. Actually already in a relationship? Not as solid ( ... )

No worries - I've often made the same mistake. :)

Oh boy, let's hope the keyboard can keep up with me this time and not crap out on any of the top-row letters...

My ships are: Arthur/Mal/Cobb (past), Arthur/Eames and potentially Ariadne/Arthur/Eames.
