Was the Zentradi Alliance Self-Destructive?: Part 2

All right, the flip side: if Zentradi aren’t inherently dangerous to humans, what about the other way around? After all, the Zentradi are often described as being "defeated" by humanity. It's possible to view the Zentradi story as one of forced assimilation, akin to what real cultures have experienced, and therefore the Zentradi as victims. Or ( Read more... )

The "Part 2" got my attention, but in making a very quick search of your tagged entries I didn't see "Part 1." In any case, supposing "I can at least still think about it" I've been contemplating of late just what I thought the Robotech novels were saying about the Zentraedi and what my "personal response" to that really was in the time in between the novels being published and when I finally got around to watching the larger world of anime itself. I suppose I had some misgivings of my own about that interview with James Luceno you quoted.

Oh, gosh--I just realized I hadn't posted part one to LJ, but had posted it everywhere else. Damn.

If you don't mind me asking, what misgivings did you have about the interview?

When I wrote my comment, I was basically just remembering that quote you posted. (I suppose that brings up the question of whether my viewpoint's been influenced even a little by yours, although to me what happened in the novels could be seen as just one little decision after another by various contributors adding up over time…) I then went back to the interview again after you asked your question and managed to wonder a little bit about Luceno saying "oh, and Brian Daley is responsible for Lancer's fate" (remembering some people didn't like that) and the comment about how, had he had complete creative freedom, the Star Wars novels would have wound up with "the same balance between space opera and militarism" as the Robotech novels… although that's definitely just me, and I can suppose I'd be lucky just to get "blank looks" from a good number of people at that.
