iphone v. storm

My mobile is due for replacement and I have been trying to fight off the urge to get an iphone (it would also mean changing to (02), but it seemed very hard to argue with the screen, especially as I would make use of the web browsing. In fact it was becoming a toss up between the nokia N96 or the iphone and it was tough, the iphone wins on screen/ ( Read more... )

My brother has an iPhone and he loves it, but he's a Mac person generally anyway.

my boss is a mac fan (he really buys everything apple release on the day it is released, when the 3g iphone came out not only did he get that, he got all (and i mean all ) the accessories, the salesman must have loved him). The battery life really gets to him, plus it is not that fast, I think he might have high hopes because he compares iphone maps to his sat nav.

Blackberry's generally have excellent battery life, but when you get away from the straight Outlook emulation functions they tend to be limited.

But clearly they are looking to break that and I've heard the more recent one's are jumping ahead in the more traditional PDA stakes. I have a Pearl, but don't use it for anything but phone and e-mail as I always have my laptop nearby anyway.

We were thinking of getting the Storm for our Chairman, but it's a vodafone exclusive in the UK and we're on a 2 year O2 contract.

ETA: I also notice that when typing it uses thier reduced keyboard and predictive text, as does the Pearl. This is something of an aquired taste as it's neither traditional QWERTY, nor 10 key predictive as used on most mobiles, but something in between. Personally I've always used the small form factor BBs and quickly got used to their predictive system, but it drives some people nuts and the dictionary can be a bit idiosyncratic. e.g. Mine insists on giveing u'm as the top choice whenever I try and type i'm

if you use it in portrait it has the perl keyboard, in landscape it has a normal qwerty one.

personally i think the storm will lose the best thing about the blackberry for me, a decent qwerty keyboard. I love the keyboard on my 8800. The 6.5 os upgrade adds lots of functionality too even if o2 suck at getting certified copies out. The bold is very nice, it's got a good camera and a very very nice screen on it. The touch screen is just a gimick to me, typing on an iphone 3g sucked so i can't see why it won't suck on a blackberry too. I was actually speaking to the MD of a blackberry gold partner support company and lambasting him about the fact that rim have gone for a touchscreen and have completely ignored slide out keyboards ALA HTC's which to me would be phone nirvana.

That said i've already got work to budget in an experia for "testing" and i'm hoping that will be my dream work phone.

It will be interesting to see how good or not the feedback touch keyboard is.

decisions, decisions... crimson_heart October 14 2008, 02:12:30 UTC
my phone contract is up for renewal in a month so i've been considering an iphone as well. i've played around with them a bit, but i'm still undecided for pretty much the same reasons you've listed. i'm not 100% on the touch screen (and my skin is so oily, yikes!), but i'm dead keen on the maps application. i could remove the heavy a-z from my purse, that would be nice.

there's nothing actually wrong with my current phone, so i don't NEED to update, i suppose i'm just being greedy. i think what i might do is get an iphone and use it for a while, then if i don't like it i'll go back to my old phone and possibly sell the iphone.
