I was at a friend's farm back in the 1980s and was asked if I wanted to try shooting with a rifle at tin cans on a fencepost. I did, and one thing television and films doesn't usually show is the power of the kick-back. I had a bruised shoulder. I did well, but not enough to make me want to own one.

My brother has rifles and goes deer and duck hunting most years, but refuses to own a handgun.

I used to shoot every weekend, and owned two lovely shotguns, a side-by-side Beretta for clays (which I never got along with particularly well - it was a very smooth gun, but heavy and poorly balanced, as clay guns often are), and an over-and-under AYA for game that was stunning - it was like holding a greyhound.

Re your last question. If I were in my house with my kids, someone was trying to get at us with intent and I happened to have a gun in my hand, yes I would both threaten to use it and follow through if required. Basically if I were defending my family (and to a slightly lesser extent myself) I would use whatever was at my disposal to do so.

However, I don't beleive in private gun ownership and wouldn't choose to have a firearm in the home unless we were facing some sort of Mad Max style breakdown of society.

You didn't include bows & crossbows! (Fired both, reasonably good at it too)

It's jolly good fun, archery clubs pretty much everywhere if you have the time.
