no biggie, it still had the former owners everything on it and I wanted to wipe it anyway.

HEre's where I'm stupid... is there a difference between windows for a pc and a laptop? now I can't get it to recognise a wireless connection, etc.

Fuck me.

Nope, no difference in the basics of Windows. The manufacturers tend to stick a bunch of crap on them, but aside from that there isnt a difference.
Wireless networking in windows is a pain in the ass.

I think i have to go download all the drivers and stuff.. or find the original disks from the girl who originally purchased the laptop. THe windows disk I have is BARE BONES!! Just Windows. No extra programs, no extra trials, nothing. Which is great. But, I don't have DVD software, wireless software, etc. any more. Makes me sad.

Did you reinstall windows? If you did, you wiped out the security settings for your wireless connection. If your router was set up to make the connection between your laptop and it secure (and it should be setup that way), then you're going to have to correct the security settings before the router will talk to your laptop.

If you don't have the password for the router, probably the easiest thing to do would be to reset the router into unsecure mode to match the unsecure mode that your laptop likely is in. Look at the router for a small hole with "reset" written on it. You'll likely need a paper clip to be able to actually press the reset button hidden down in the tiny hole.

If you succeed at resetting the router, your laptop should be able to connect to it and the internet. Just remember you're now on an unsecure connection so anyone else with a wireless card nearby can see what you're up to.
