unusual lightning in the sky

I don't know if it's just me being out at the wrong times but in the past month or two I have noticed a significant increase in lighting, and it's always silent lighting, no noise, it lasts for over half an hour and it reminds me of 'the day after tomorrow'...it's just scary/unusual/holy because it would never occur this often before, or even occur
