This ending: He lost Riley once. Now he's lost her again. In that, if nothing else, there is symmetry. This time hurts less. Maybe that's the trick. Maybe that's part of the lesson. Maybe he has to do this over and over again until he can do it without feeling anything.

Is just so very true and a very insightful look into the life of John Connor. Perhaps that is true, perhaps he has to lose his humanity, piece by piece, in order to make the tough choices that will allow him to lead the Resistance in the future.

Loved this. Thanks for sharing!

Oh, wow! This is all kinds of wonderful.

And he often wonders if it's really any different than what Jesse did with Riley.

Startling insight. I love thinking that this is the reason he catches on to Jesse in the present, and keeps playing her game - because it's a game that John Connor recognizes and understands. I love that all these ideas and potential decisions are at the core of John and the question is always simply... which way will he jump this time?

"It felt like home," she answers dully, her chest tight with the weight of how much she's lost.

Ugh, what a beautiful way of summarizing how effed up Sarah's sense of family is, and how she clings to the past and what she's lost with this odd, protective nostalgia. She's always looking forward and yet always looking behind herself, too.

You have now written me two spectacular fics in a row! I am honored, thank you! :D

I am so glad you liked it. And I am SO SORRY it was late. UGH. I got so behind last month.

For so many years, she looked at John and saw the shadow of Kyle. And now she finds herself searching Kyle's features for any echo of her lost son

Love that.

"It felt like home"

That says it all. I like how you set up the parallels of Sarah and John facing these reminders of their past. it was woven together nicely.

I don't normally care much about future war. I don't care about resistance soldiers fighting endos; I don't care about HKs and plasma rifles. To me, that stuff is only interesting as flashback of what's been and as the threat of what could be again. But the way your future war is filtered through the characters makes it very intimate and enjoyable to read.

I'm right there with you on most future war. If it doesn't have the character interactions there's no appeal.

I really liked this. Roxy's already pinched my very favourite line but there was a lot of stuff to love. No surprises that the Sarah/Kyle/Derek sections held the most resonance for me, but the slow build-up to John meeting Riley was also really well handled. The downbeat, subtle exchange between them when they finally do speak was note-perfect.

And a final, big love for a Sarah Connor so bad-ass she'll offer to donate blood despite not actually having any left-over to give. That's our girl ;-)
