thanks for posting about this film. i'm curious to see it and the arguments that it presents.

i was born at home, with the help of a midwife/nurse (or so my mom tells me), and i turned out ok.

what scares me is that any woman whom i might choose to have a child with in the future will want to go through the above medical procedures. i hope i'm able to talk with her and find out an alternative (or perhaps the hospital is the alternative in the first place?) method for safe childbirth. if not, then...well, i don't know.

i thought the most interesting part was when they talked about how the "love" hormones happen at birth and form an attachment. it's such an important part of mammalian birth to form that kind of attachment. and the drugs that induce don't allow for that. i also liked that it did show when it was appropriate for medical interventions to take place.

i don't know. i think communication is key. at least you're thinking about it :) education may be the most important aspect. after my lifelong experience of abject horror at the idea of pregnancy and birthing i'm surprised that i actually enjoyed watching the natural home births. it's so very different.

Yeah, just like everything else in American medical culture, birth is all about the drugs and making it as unnatural as possible. I really do think that taking the more natural route with midwives and doulas sounds like a much better idea than the hospital birth. It doesn't surprise me in the least that OBs campaign against these people; they take away customers, and to hell with whether or not it's good for those customers.

And episiotomies are evil! Do not get them! They cut through important tissues that leave women with decreases sensation (sexual and otherwise) for the rest of their lives, and they're not necessary!

Glad to see you posting again!
