Why couldn't I just be content?
I had to be involved and say something.
Even though it was just a little something
Now I'm paying the price.
I could have just been an observer.
I'd been doing that for a couple of months.
and the friendship is over.
just like that
(
because I promised )

tell me, what does philosophy know of broken hearts?
and rifts between friends?
Seneca and Livy, Epectitus and Marcus Aurelius, and the wise of antiquity found salves, and threw themselves into their studies.
"The only way to be reconciled to old friends is to part with them for good: at a distance we may chance to be thrown back (in a waking dream) upon old times and old feelings: or at any rate we should not think of renewing our intimacy, till we have fairly spit our spite, said, thought, and felt all the ill we can of each other."
[William Hazlitt, from “On the Pleasure of Hating.”]
