Name: Jade Curtiss
Gender: Male
Age: 35
Fandom: Tales of the Abyss
Time period: Right after the last event in the Contamination Sidequest

Pokemon: Totodile
Distinguishing Characteristics: Red eyes, glasses and a Pacman belt
Explanation: Personality-wise, Totodiles are said to be mischievous, but with a serious side that appears whenever it's needed. They're able to react quickly to changes in battle and adjust their strategies accordingly. All of these are part of Jade's personality, as he can be playful, but can immediately bounce back to serious and coldly logical if the situation calls for it. In addition, totodiles are mainly blue with yellow and red accents, which is similar to Jade's default costume.

History:

Personality:
If you look up "villain" in the dictionary, I bet you'll see Jade's face next to it.

...That isn't enough? Oh, very well. I suppose I can elaborate.

As far as most people are concerned, Jade is simply a Colonel in the Malkuth military who is unnaturally skilled with Fonic Artes; a person who expresses nothing except mild amusement to any given situation but will get the job done, no matter what. A most interesting enigma, but one that most are glad to leave well alone.

Go a little deeper, and you'll find that Jade has a rather unconventional sense of humour. He can banter with the best of them, and is always ready with a witty comment, sometimes even edging towards cruelty. He loves to call himself an 'old man', despite being only 35 years old. If you're doing something he finds monumentally stupid, he will call you out on it, often in a condescending way. In other words, he is a troll and will troll you with or without any provocation. You'll also find that Jade is scarily competent, and seems to know about everything. It's almost as if he had read the game script beforehand...

Deeper still, and you begin to find that his title of 'Necromancer' is well deserved. Jade is a very practical person, not one to consider morals when he's on the battlefield. If an enemy was at his mercy, he would not spare them, not even if they were a defenseless little girl driven by blind hatred. In fact, the 'Necromancer' title came from his experiments on fallen soldiers while he was still researching on Fomicry. Fortunately for the rest of the world, he had outgrown his complete lack of morals towards towards human experimentation. His ruthlessly pragmatic attitude applies in situations outside of battle as well. Jade has no qualms about manipulating people or using underhanded methods to achieve his goals, such as in the sidequest to unlock his Fonic Artes, where he does some dubiously legal things like using the rocks needed for the Artes without waiting for permission from the owners.

Perhaps he finally 'cares' for you now, inasmuch as he can care for anyone. You'll find that Jade is very insightful, not only towards scientific matters, but also in matters of the heart and mind. He finds people easy to read, but don't worry, he's not one for divulging others' secrets. He might scold you or lecture you, but it's only because he cares. Otherwise, he would only mock you when you fail. Still, it might take a third party to point out this side of his personality before you realize it.

A lot of Jade's quirks are due to his intelligence and his background. He finds mundane tasks such as explaining and pushing boxes quite tedious and likes to leave them for others to do. He's one of the most passive members of the main party, preferring to allow others to lead and solve problems on their own, despite being able to do a better job than they can. His intelligence has already caused numerous problems with the inventions such as Fomicry and Fonic Sight. All of these have resurfaced in the present day to hurt others in some way, especially Fomicry. He feels a large amount of guilt for his actions, at one point stating, "I'll live the rest of my life pained by the sins of my past." Part of his reluctance to take charge stems from the fact that he's very cautious, not wanting to do any more damage than he already has done. Well, that and because he's incredibly lazy.

Yes, lazy. Jade has an extremely unconcerned attitude towards everything. Whenever he's asked to elaborate on his opinions, he often responds with something along the lines of "never mind" or "that isn't important right now". Part of it is due to his distaste for explaining, but the other part is because he simply doesn't care enough to argue. Even when others are making large mistakes, he rarely steps in unless it's absolutely necessary. An example would be the group's journey in Deo Pass. Jade was content to sit back and watch Luke continue to make a fool of himself, only taking charge at the very end when Luke insists on continuing even at the risk of shortening Ion's life.

Jade is a very self-aware person. He acknowledges his strengths as well as his flaws. He understands that he's far more intelligent than most people, but also knows that his intelligence makes him far too cold and practical. Realizing that he's dangerous if he lets go of himself, Jade keeps his thoughts and emotions tightly under wraps. In fact, pretty much the only time he expresses extreme emotion in the game is when the subject of Fomicry comes up. Even then, he quickly returns to his default pokerface and apologizes for losing control.

Responsibility is an important concept for Jade. He believes it's necessary to face the truth and accept his own mistakes, and he expects others to do the same. His disdain for Luke after Akzeriuth was not because Luke had destroyed the city, but because Luke had showed no signs of accepting responsibility or wanting to think for himself. Jade's sense of responsibility can show up in rather unexpected situations. As part of the military police, he's willing to put some effort into investigate suspicious activities, such as searching for contraband items in Din's Shop.

His journey with Luke and the others had changed him in subtle ways. First and foremost, Jade is beginning to understand the concept of 'death' a bit better, although he still expresses uncertainty at times. He's able to come to terms with his past sins, emerging a stronger person who hopes to use Fomicry to help replicas become more than mere substitutes. Furthermore, he's slightly less closed off towards others. The best example of this would be in Daath, after he had asked Luke to give his life to destroy the miasma. Although he calmly and clearly states his reasons for believing why Luke should die in Asch's place, he still says he wishes to stop Luke as they're friends.

=== Samples: ===
First Person:
1) You discover a secret passage in a basement. What do you do?
Oh, I've investigated it already. It's disappointingly small and ill-maintained. A large family would have trouble evacuating through it.

2) Have you ever wanted to communicate with aliens from another planet?
If aliens truly exist? Then yes, it would be quite a fascinating experience. However, the existence of aliens hasn't yet be proven, although it hasn't been disproved of either. I suppose we'll simply have to wait and see if such a thing is actually possible.

3) Would you feel comfortable stating your opinion to a very important person?
Comfortable? Well, I don't feel uncomfortable doing it, but explaining my thoughts is so very tedious...

4) Do you like to do things according to plan?
It makes things so much simpler, don't you agree? At my age, it becomes quite tiring to keep up with all the twists and turns that happen when a plan goes wrong.

5) Do you think that lies are sometimes necessary?
Honesty is an admirable trait, but only when it doesn't hinder you.

Third Person:
He supposed he could count himself as one of the lucky ones. He still had his arms and legs, which was more than the unlucky souls who had been transformed into bird or serpent pokemon could say. Jade had managed to adapt to his new form rather quickly, although the small size was rather irritating. The only difficulty he encountered was having to break the habit of biting anything that moved. Although it had resulted in a few amusing encounters, there was no point in making enemies this early on.

Besides, spitting water at everyone was just as entertaining.

But it was time to get serious. He had been here for almost a week, exploring his new body and learning his way around the island. It was time to begin the search in earnest for a way back to Auldrant. While this had been a most fascinating break, there were things that he needed to finish before he could truly rest. The thought of Van was an ever-present shadow that loomed over his mind. Whether or not they could defeat him was the biggest variable in this equation, the one that would determine the course that Auldrant would take.

As for Luke's fate, he had examined and re-examined the situation from all angles. The conclusion he had arrived at was a one he despised, but no amount of futile wishing on his part would change it. There was no point in dwelling on the matter, especially when Van was such an immediate threat.

But to defeat Van, he had to find a way back to Auldrant first. The guilds seem to be the key to the whole puzzle, and Jade was determined to find the right one for himself before tying himself down. So far, the Thieves' Guild seemed to be more interesting than the other two, but Jade had heard enough to know that he would disapprove of the shadier side of the Guild. The Rescue Guild seemed to be good for nothing but running simple errands. Which left the Exploration Guild. While it had seemed too stuffy at first, further investigation showed that it seemed to have more influence than he initially thought. It was beginning to look like a more attractive prospect by the day.

Still, it was an important choice, and Jade wanted to be absolutely sure before making his final decision. He could afford to wait and gather more information.
