He picks up his glass and swirls it so that the liquid just skirts the rim. Spins it a couple more times, till Kara thinks she might scream. Finally he tosses the drink back. Then he drops his hand and twists his wedding ring off. He puts it on the table next to the empty glass. Only then does he meet her eyes.
“There’s the game, Kara. You in or you out?”
She’s beginning to understand what he is to her. Lee is there, like her faith. Sometimes she rails at the gods, sometimes she’s grateful for their presence, but no matter how dark her world gets, she knows where to find them. She’s been moving blindly for a while now. She puts her hand out to the sun.
I would love to see Lee make bold statemnet like this and Kara being in the right place to respect it as a bold move and jump in head first like one of her many stunts
Alanna and I were discussing whether pilots address the issue first, or if they just slide into an affair. It seems reasonable to assume that Lee would be wary of starting something without at least some confirmation that Kara was in step with him.
(I mean, clearly they're already all entangled with each other, but Lee's got to still be hesitant about completely jumping off the cliff. And now I've truly mangled all my metaphors.)
I love fics that go backwards. When a fic does it well, usually the last section resonates more than the rest. And frankly, the simplicity of the last line is exquisite. Did you know what that last line was going to be before you started?
Anyway, just lovely overall. A great follow up to UB.
Oh, desperately needed post-UB Pilots fic! *clings* I loved the backwards timeline and the fact that Kara took his tags, and I love the markers scene, and your reconstruction of the boxing match brought it all flooding back, with a couple of the tears (and I SWORE I'd done crying them!).

I started with the last line, actually. :0) And then I pretty much wrote it from the bottom up. Kinda fun, and also confusing (for me)!
Mille grazie!
