Oh, come on! Didn't you get the message? (I forget who the messenger was, but Thomas Frank quotes him a lot in his book.) Rich and poor are complete choices, like where you sit in the high school cafeteria. And we all know how easy it is for a nerd to change his mind and decide to sit with the jocks.

I remember a lot of ramen, spaghettios, cheap pasta'n'sauce, and whatever fruits or veggies were on sale. Oh, and rice. Lots of rice.
Meat was what I got when someone had leftover food on campus, or I broke down and splurged on Chinese. Mmmm, ribs.
It sucked. Lots.
And yes, it's very possible to subsist on really cheap food, but it's annoying, repetitive and bad for you :(
