"I don't know just where I'm going, but I'm going to try for the kingdom, if I can..."

This is the semester that I actually work for the things I want to understand, and break my fingers for what I want to create. I'm done being a bobby-soxer.  (Granted, I'm still taking one course on comics, and another on arithmetically-based relativity, but...)

a mix fit for a king.*

More later.

*or Eric Mchaels. Same thing.

So, this mix, because of the way I rabbit-hole my life full of narratives, evolved with/out of a fairy tale I was making as I went along. I can't tell you the ending. I can give you the beginning, and you can put the ending together for yourself.

"There were once two kingdoms, which, by a special arrangement, had long been closely allied. The agreement - that, at the appropriately deemed time, the youngest daughter of one kingdom would be wedded to the eldest son of the other. In this way, it was suggested, the two kingdoms would always remain loyal to one another, and the survival of one always depended on the survival of both. For generations, the Twin Kingdoms gew and flourished, fending off invasions, encouraging the growth of their capitals and the happiness of their peoples.

And then, to the surprise of all, one of the kingdoms fell. An indecorous, moonlit coup led by a ragged band of warriors. The king, his family, and his entire court were killed over only the course of a night.

The castle's eldest son survived, to his shame, he had escaped into the forest when he heard the first cries of the women.

On foot, he made his way through to the other kingdom. They took him in, and determined to raise him as their own, even while he would never be heir to their throne.

He was a brilliant, but solitary boy, spending most of his time far out in the fields, traveling, reading, or hunting, often accompanied by the youngest daughter of his new home.

She was, if possible, an even stranger child, rarely opening her mouth except to sing, with a voice so innocent and bewitching that the ones that didn't suspect her of being a changeling, suspected her of being part bird.

They were as happy as two such strange kids could be, until he reached manhood, and realized that he could no longer stay in a castle that was not his, or seek to partner with any girl he couldn't offer a home to. The prince without a kingdom determined to flee as far as he could, to a place where no one would recognize him, and he could begin a new life. With him, of course, came the young princess."
