This strong independent Termari is one I love. This:when women love, they love with all their being but men are a different matter altogether. It is not equivalent exchange and that is not something she’ll ever agree to.
and: mostly, she seeks out his company because he doesn’t push, let’s matters drop and leaves them be and despite the many arguments - and disagreements - that define their professional relationship, they agree on one thing unspoken: Love is troublesome.

She comes off to me, too, as someone very independent and, except for her brothers, as someone who would not seriously allow someone in. They way her relationship with Shikamaru is explained is perfect too. ( I do think they would at least have or try a relationship, but I'm not sure it would ever work out. I'm so glad you liked it - relieved, actually, because I was afraid her relationship with Shikamaru would come on too strong and Temari would come off too, well, aggressive. And really, it's all thanks to your prompt that I was able to write this!

I think that communicates well the way that these three aren't actually a family in the normal sense of the word.
