There is a bridge.
It is old. Well travelled.
Ropes yellowed. With age. Nails rusty. Corroded. Boards hardened. Worn.
Many have crossed. Not all have survived.
It spans a chasm. A yawning void. Treacherous. Dangerous. Unknown.
It is deep. The bottom a mystery. To fall. To fall and fall. No safety net. One wrong step. One small mistake. It all comes crashing down.
It is the only. From this side to that. The route one must take. To get from here to there.
Here a green meadow. Known. Learnt. Explored. Nothing left. No more surprises. No hidden wonders. And so you look. Across the chasm. Beyond the steep cliffs. The jutting rocks. Seek out. That which lays across from you. Excitement for the new. The unexplored. What might be. Could be. Just out of reach. Beyond your grasp.
And that is the point. The thing. The question. On your lips and mine. That is everything. Is it worth it? The risk. The danger. Is it worth the fall? Everything tumbling down. Everything changing.
No matter what it will. One act. One step. One moment. That is all it will take. All it ever takes. To make a mistake. To discover a new world.
Stare out. Across the gulf. Between now and then. Known and unknown. Weigh the options. The choices. Even now. Require an informed decision.
After everything. Must search the evidence. Lay it out. Present the case.
To stay. Safe. Sound. Sane.
To take the leap. Perilous. Insane. Not knowing. Not caring. Hoping. Against hope.
Know the outcome. The decision has been made. In reality. A mere formality. Convincing myself it is mine.
My choice. My faith. Me.
But it was made. The day we met. Each one after. Simply leading us here. To this. This moment. This footfall.
So I do.
I close my eyes. Ere and now. I close my eyes and let my foot fall.
Feel the bridge. Sturdy. Ignore the sound. The creaks. The groans. The protests.
One step. Then another. And another.
Concentrate on walking. More than ever before. Do not look down. Do not think. Second guess.
Just keep walking. Until I am in your arms.
