Two weeks ago, Weldon Brook WMA.  Reasonably nice place, dry acidic woods interspersed with wetlands.  Found Cypripedium acaule, didn't find what we were looking for.

Last week, Sparta Mountain WMA.  Lovely place, similar terrain, lots of Cypripedium acaule:

Well, it's been a long time since I posted anything here, but with the beginning of another year of hiking and orchid hunting comes new pictures.  winktwice and I started off the year with a trip to Clinton WMA, which was quite a nice place, and a new (to us) location for Galearis spectabilis, which were just starting to put up flower spikes.

I've been doing quite a bit of hiking lately, most of it related to some academic research I'm doing with winktwice on our latest-flowering orchid, Spiranthes cernua.  I've taken a zillion pictures of them (for data), but at f/32 they're not going to be winning any contests any time soon.  I'll eventually edit some of them and post them, after the season ( Read more... )

I've been posting so much about plants growing out in the field that I've neglected the stuff in the back yard.  This year winktwice and I expanded the garden to a total of 9 4'x8' beds for growing vegetables, plus a 20'x2' bed along the fence that's full of sunroots.  This is the haul so far this year:

This weekend has been up and down for hiking.  The down part was yesterday at Franklin Parker Preserve, where winktwice and I spent all day roasting in the sun walking old roads and not finding anything.  It ended up hotter than I expected, and nearly eight miles with no shade in summer is rough stuff.  I want to love that preserve so much, and though I ( Read more... )

This weekend has been spectacular weather for hiking.  And, winktwice and I had a spectacular hike in it yesterday when we headed down into the Pine Barrens.  We first stopped in Bryne State Forest where we found a little swamp containing the brilliant orange Platanthera cristata and a few of the white Platanthera blephariglottis.  We had high hopes to find ( Read more... )
