Today I watched Ghosts of Abu Ghraib.

It will make you horrified, and angry, and hopefully horrified again.

And it inspired a little deep thinking in me. Please do not read this if a) you don't want to be spoiled for SGA episode Critical Mass- there is a TINY mention that should not confuse someone who doesn't care for the show, but may incite some ( Read more... )

I couldn't watch it, I get way too involved and depressed over that kind of show. I just can't take anything to do with torture, not in books or movies or the news, anything. I completely freaks me out, always have. (I was probably tortured in a previous life)

There is no justification for torture in a civilised society - I don't care what attacks are averted. If the only way we can survive is by becoming the very thing we're supposed to be fighting against - then we're not worthy of surviving.

Good soapbox - thanks.

Yeah, there are parts of it that are so hard to watch, most of us were in tears.
The thing that's fascinating and so disturbing and wonderful about the movie-makers (Bobby Kennedy's daughter Rory) is that they showed it to you in a kind of timeline- like how the soldiers started and got involved in it. I just had an argument with someone- I hate it when they say it's the people on the top, blah blah blah... I mean, of course it is. But the people on the bottom can't just physically and sexually torture people because someone encourages them to do it and says they can!
And urrgh! If I had seen any guilt... It would have made me feel a little sorry for them.
Thanks for your comment!
