If I'm not mistaken, Jake Gyllenhaal is ethnically Mid-Eastern; I believe he's Jewish on his mother's side (Foner), and is Sephardic - that is, the branch of Judaism that started in Persia.

Look at pictures of Persians, Parsi, Irani, Ajam, and Iranians, he doesn't exactly stick out.

It's not like they cast Tom Cruise, innit?

Well, I suppose my point was that instead of finding someone a little more authentic, that could really sell it because they are it, they chose to go with an A-lister that is more of a crowd pleaser than true to the part.

However, you are correct. Quoted from IMDB "His father is of partial Swedish heritage and his mother is of Ashkenazi Jewish heritage."

Eh, it just brings to mind the usual hollywood blah of casting predominantly white people in ethnic roles to appeal to the predominantly white audience...instead of trying to open their minds more. Or is that too much to ask for?

Jackie Chan and Jet Li make kickass action movies, so why can't a middle eastern man? are we that generalized about that region of the world to assume that about the actors?

But thank you for not doing worse like Tom Cruise. you have an extremely valid point there.
