I can list for you some common textual cues which indicate people operating with high emotion and/or low rationality; none is 100% reliable inicator, but you can use such a checklist to estimate your odds of being able to have productive discussion in a given circumstance. I use it myself pretty often. Comment to my lj if you would find such a list valuable, and I'll respond there.
