So, I've just finished watching
City of Ember.
Hmm, basically.
I was too annoyed by the plot to be properly entertained. I know it was based on a children's book, and maybe the flaws are better explained in the book itself, but in the film they just stand out as being ridiculous. In particular :
- If The Builders can devise a time-locked metal box which manages to stay working for two hundred years, why on earth do they then put the instructions it contains on something is impermanent as paper? (which is subsequently eaten by a small child)
- What on earth is that tool Tim Robbins ends up giving Doon? Why does it suddenly become significant when the waterwheel fails and how did he know it would be useful for that? (What the hell does it do?)
- Why is the escape route so damn convoluted?
I'm probably being a bit harsh, but simple things like this bother me. It's almost as if the writers don't expect children to think.
