[Geek] Window managers

Are there any window managers which allow you to partition your desktop and have applications snap into those partitions, such that when you maximise them, they take up the maximum allowed space for that partition ( Read more... )

Hmm, you can get Fluxbox to get applications to remember their states, but I'm not sure this is completely useful. I would recommend looking for wmctrl, a command line utility which lets you identify windows and send the window manager commands to move them, resize them and so on. I use it in a script to instantiate and position a bunch of terminals on a specific desktop on login.

Heh, this is how Windows 1 worked. You dragged the icon over the top of a window and the applications swapped places in that window. You may be able to find a Windows 1 theme for whatever window manager you're using presently.
