Getting information and acting on it

I should be packing right now, not making grenadine and not posting to LiveJournal, but I occasionally (probably above daily on average) have a thought that I think about posting here, and I almost never do. The thought of the moment, though, is probably in the top few this month, and I may want to write it all down here sometime, so I'll see what ( Read more... )

What recipe are you using for grenadine? How did it turn out?

I think college is a time where most people end up being taught a lens through which to view the world, their part in it, and their decision making process. I'd like to see that pushed earlier as well. An interesting thought.

Not teaching the one true way to make decisions, obviously, but teaching how to recognize what you really want to do, how to get information on it, when and how to start acting on it, etc.

I'll see you soon, but I'll probably forget my comment by then, so here:

I think what you are referring to is similar to the philosophies of many of the alternative private schools out there. From what I've read and heard, the Montessori method emphasizes children driving and pacing their own learning. Public school, outside of extracurricular activities, is generally a wash until high school. I can't find the link, but there is an excellent 8-page essay out there on the origins of today's public school system and how difficult it will be to retool it.

I agree 100% that teaching decision making and the ramifications thereof early is useful and powerful. I give a lot of credit to my elementary school for where I am today.
