Network speed

Somehow this week my Internet connection speed went from ~330/310 kbps down/up to ~630/310 now. My best explanation is that I moved my cable somewhat. But I've done so before with no change, I think. And the slow speed is due to the crappy connections elsewhere in the building. Maybe I'll ask the front desk whether any techs were let into the phone ( Read more... )

I think your connection is just excited to have so much awesome computer science running across it :-P

I've seen 10dB or more in analog signal improvement from tightening a nut on a coaxial cable. It wouldn't surprise me too much that moving a cable would improve demodulated digital throughput by improving the waveform somewhat. Then again, I'm completely guessing there.

Improving bandwidth like that probably doesn't happen by wiggling a cable---you would need to have dropped a significant fraction of your pre-wiggle packets, which seems unlikely (you'd probably have noticed if that were happening). According to Cisco, coax cables support 100Mbps just fine, so the cable really shouldn't be limiting you here. I'll bet your ISP just upgraded something on their end (or elsewhere upstream; perhaps some techs have indeed been in the phone room recently).
