at the wonderful Great American Music Hall about a week and a half ago. Found out that it's being run by the same folks as Slim's these days, something I was previously unaware of. Talked a bit to the bar folks before the show which was really cool especially as they really appreciated the Turbonegro shirt I had on. It's interesting that a couple years away from working with the public I can actually be a people person (as much as I can be anyway).
Anyhow - John was acoustic and solo. He was pretty good - especially on the X songs - but seemed a bit tired and I didn't feel his energy was quite there. He did mention coming out with the Knitters though in a month (actually Feb 14th) which I'm stoked about.
Syd, on the other hand was both great _and_ witty. The fact that she was tossing back drinks like a sailor didn't seem to hurt at all. She had a fantastic band that included another X man DJ Bonebreak on drums and Willie Aaron on guitar. John came up for 2 songs (maybe 3 ) and was great (even though the last song was a bit of a disaster - albeit a happy and well meaning one). Given that she's only had two albums of her own out she played for a long time, which made me happy. She's in fine voice - just as good (if not better) than when I saw her in the Golden Palominos at the Berkeley Square back in '87. The only Palominos tune she played was Diamond (great) though I incorrectly shouted out for "I was the one" when I meant "I've been the one"... Syd, if you're unfamiliar with her is a fantastic country-ish belter with a touch of NYC hipsterism (sans the obnoxiousness). She's also the kind of singer that has so much heart that it makes your eyes wet just listening to her. She made a joke about putting the Tree back in country that was hilarious. She also gave out her home phone # to the crowd in a heckling moment. Bad move Syd - now I'm gonna try to interview you... I could go see her three times a month and it would still be just as great. Thanks and much love Syd.
