EBay is closing its Vancouver support center on July 24th, laying off 700 people.  They are then going to be expanding the Salt Lake center.  This means they're hiring again in Salt Lake.  I applied for the supervisor position, the position I held before they laid me off last October.  Is this stupid?  It will be awkward if I get it, returning to ( Read more... )

Something about reducing workforce size to become more efficient and more responsive. You know, the usual BS for trying to cut costs by cutting payroll.

I'm kind of in a similar situation. My current employer uses my previous employer for all the manufacturing work of our products. So I'm in direct contact, on a daily basis, with the very people who laid me off. The only difference is, I'm now their customer.

The reason I was laid off at the old place was there was no work- the housing market bottomed out, so nobody needed new windows for the houses they weren't building or buying. If a lack of work was just an excuse to get rid of me, then I think it would be awkward dealing with these people again- but it's not.

So yeah, moral of the story, I think if the reason eBay laid you off was financially motivated and not personal, then they'll hire you back.
