For what it is worth you have the right of it.

I have noticed that sometimes it is best, when they get mad, just to let them have a bit of space (not leaving the room or anything) but just wait for them to say something next. It might take a long time, just don't leave and don't say anything.

Of course, each woman is different so it's your call.
