Up to the point where Lurky said he would return Spike's soul, I thought Spike thought he wanted the chip out, but really deep down wanted something else (probably to be human) and that subconscious desire was what Lurky was going to grant. I didn't think that they'd give Spike a soul because that would make Angel no longer unique, so I figured that turning Spike human was the logical thing. Plus it had been foreshadowed by Spike's "real boy" line.
The minute Lurky said he was restoring Spike's soul, though, I realized that I'd been wrong, and Spike had in fact asked for his soul back all along, and could see all the little clues to that effect that I'd missed (such as Lurky saying "You dare ask for restoration?" as a reference to the Ritual of Restoration.)
I don't think it ever occurred to me he'd get the chip out. I didn't know he'd get the soul or turn human or any of that, but chip out never registered.
Well, I was certain he wouldn't become a villain again even if he did get the chip out. I actually wanted him to get the chip out -- and then realize that it had never been the chip making him feel guilty about attacking Buffy, or making him fall for her in the first place. And then have to deal with that realization.
Had to send my brain into a bit of a time warp; pretty much my memory is of grief; actual grief, even with a week's warning and total fury.
Salutory lesson in not acting on your emotions at times like that.
But as for Spike; even now the idea that he was going to get a soul makes no sense; never even occured to me until the writers strarted saying that is what they meant all along.
Not that I don't believe them; I do, but the way they wrote those eps make it seem a bit ludicrous.
Mostly I regret that they didn't have Spike's soul re-emerge because of the chip; making all kinds of stories about the morality of the Slayer's mission to kill vampires.
I clicked 'to get a soul' but I was completely spoilered before it happened, so I don't think my vote really counts.
I think the clues are there that that is what he wants, though. I think that thinking he wanted the chip out is just ignoring the evidence, even if the evidence is presented in a regrettably murky fashion.
I don't know what to click because, once upon a time, I was spoiled and I already knew what was going to happen.
In any case ... I don't get this endless discussion anyway? Like, whether or not he wanted something else, he got a soul. Stop. That's a fact. I don't get why still bothering on dissecting that scene to prove what? Also, goddamnit, it's called plot-twist, Tumblr guys!
I think the motivation debate boils down to people wanting to diminish it. After all, if he went to get the chip out so he can go on a kill spree, it's not that much different than a curse, is it?

You can't argue with someone who takes words over actions.
