Too right. There seems to be a trend these days towards people wanting every character in a show to be perfect and perfectly nice, to never screw up or say, or do, something they might later regret. It's silly.

And oh, so boring.

Oh, yes.

"These characters are all flawed and real, that's what makes them great! Now let's proceed to judge them over anything that could possibly be construed as problematic!"

People act like characters would stay the same if they became main characters. That would not happen. There is a reason why just about every ep that focuses on a character revolves around them screwing up or being "dark", whether it's Giles in A Dark Age or Tara in Family.

I don't really understand this desire to have everything 'safe' and 'nice' all the time. Okay, I have my limits - definitely. The AR was a step too far for me, and I can understand people not wanting to watch shows that have high levels of violence because they find it hard to be detached about it and bear in mind that it's not real (I certainly have that problem), but wanting characters in mainstream shows (among which I include BtVS because it was shown on a network channel) to be 100% perfect? So boring, and yes, only something that's at all likely to happen when it's a supporting character like Tara. A 'perfect' main character would be so dull I couldn't see a show with such a character as the lead lasting for more than a few episodes.

I don't think they actually do want it. They just claim to want it because they know they wouldn't get it. If it's plot in-absentia, they can make it up themselves. I tend to think that's what's behind the uptick in favorite characters being very minor. Who's to say Kendra wouldn't have been the best slayer ever if she didn't die? Damned writers.

It's sort of the same thing as sequels. Lots of people want sequels, but what they really want is *their* sequel. When they get their sequel and it disappoints, then the writers RUINED EVERYTHING.
