And so it begins, and SOPA/PIPA hasn't even been voted on yet.

For the linkophobic, basically Megaupload got shut down over a few users who pirated copyright material.  Now, while I'm not at all against enforcing copyright laws in principle, I do object to the idea in how entertainment moguls want to enforce such infringements by strong-arming sites ( Read more... )

OpenCongress.org is reporting that there are 41 senators now opposed to PIPA as written, which means they'll have to go back to the drawing board. In other words, victory, because it can't surpass a filibuster.

SOPA in the House, meanwhile has 108 opposed and 80 pro. And Speaker Boehner isn't going to bring it up until consensus can be had. Again, victory.

Of course, we shouldn't rest on our laurels just yet. There will be rewrites, and as we all know "Devil's in the details".

(By the way, should I mention that some of the supporters of these odious bills are themSELVES copyright thieves? Another case of "Why am I not surprised?")
