the sirens call.

"I've seen a hint of it; this happiness, this bliss
Just knowing it exists, I know that I must try.
And I've caught a glimpse of it
One moment, just one kiss, from a corner of my eye
Of better days gone by.
I can almost taste happiness."

It's not perfect, but it never has been.

Luke, waking to see Reid sleeping next to him, lets a tear slip out.

This is a happy ending, but it still makes me feel sad. How do you ever get past it? How do you not throw it back in the person's face, even years and years down the road during an argument? Gah...so sad. And even the betrayer...how do you ever forgive yourself? The part about everything Luke does from now on being an act of contrition...OMG. So, sad. But so REAL.

This story was perfection! I love your writing style, and everything here just feels so genuine and tangible. The whole thing about loving one's "boring, everyday life." It's so true, and it's so easy to take things for granted with the people we love.

The part about Reid hoping that him not being able to meet Luke's eyes is only temporary -- *heart clenches*

Thank you for sharing this with us!

I am going to reread it.

I just reread this, and I think what I love most about it is yes, it's a LuRe story, and we all love LuRe around here, but it could be anyone's story. Anyone who's ever been in a close relationship (partnership or friendship) knows that that no matter how much you love someone, if you're together long enough, you're going to hurt one another in some way. It's inevitable.

Love is worth fighting for, even if the person/thing you are fighting is yourself.

These are the moments in real life that only the two people living them know what it really feels like to suffer through it, and try to forgive, and trudge forward because forgetting sometimes is not an option. I agree so much with what Dpracket said. If you are in a relationship for a long time, you are going to hurt each other.

I've always found forgiveness is a lot easier than forgetting, but I have learned also that time can heal a lot of wounds and if you don't fight for love, then you will never have the scars showing that you won a battle well fought, and worth winning. Thanks for some very beautiful writing.

So much love for this story! I always want to applaud you for going where other writers don't have the guts to go, and the end result is always amazing!
I'd like to believe LuRe aren't these perfect or at least mostly flawless people we sometimes make them out to be, so it's really refreshing to see them struggle and overcome their problems, even if it does hurt - and it hurts so good!

Thank you so much for sharing this with us!

Taking each other for granted--that I can happening with these two (I've written about it too myself) and neither is perfect so one or the other could seriously screw up.

Great job with this. Intense and emotional.
