My sisters are visiting (I am not) and I was hoping if anyone more local would be able to suggest to them something more timely and interesting than what might be found in some guide or brochure.

I'm not a power-shopper, but if you want to avoid the 'fancy' big stories (Big Macys, Bergdorffs, Bloomingdales, etc), for clothes/fashion the 'bargain' place is usually considered to be Century 21 (http://www.c21stores.com/#/store-locations/?store=manhattan), which is downtown near the Ground Zero site. It does have deals you won't find anywhere else
