Can anybody recommend a type of bird feeder that:
- takes seed mix
- is suitable for small birds, in particular sparrows
- and critically, doesn't spill half the food on the ground!

Those little plastic budgie feeders you get in petshops with a hopper at the bottom might just do it.

Ask these people: https://www.facebook.com/TallGreyBird

I met them at Godalming Independent Market at the weekend and they were very nice.

Their stuff is attractive, but their only seed feeder looks like it would immediately fill up with water - plus all the jackdaws and magpies would scoff the lot!

I have a plastic seed feeder with head holes which is embedded inside a hanging metal cage (similar to the mesh feeder for nuts and large seeds which is also inside another cage and the caged fat block holder). With that one, the spillage is entirely down to some birds flinging out the individual pieces they don't want and the squirrels swinging on it to deliberately knock some food out. The sparrows actually prefer the white sunflower seeds in the other feeder though.
