What I actually did was discover some typos in Dad's proof and then get muddled up by an entirely unnecessary proof by induction that he had introduced, then sit down and prove to my own satisfaction that of course the sides of a Pythagorean Triple (right angle triangle with integer sides, and the sides have no common factor) must be short sides even, odd, with the long side odd. And reached the bonus conclusion that the even short side must be a multiple of 4, not just 2.
Then my mum phoned.
And there went my day.
