I love the song - I was confused by it at first (although I liked all the individual sections) but what you said about it seeming like a musical is kind of exactly what I've been thinking! It reminds me of something like Green Day's "Jesus of Suburbia," all those different sections that tell parts of the same story? Which I think is a really cool style to tackle. And I've also been comparing it to "Sherlock" (listening to "Clue" and "Note" on their own feels so empty since I got used to Sherlock).
I LOVE posts like this, this was such an awesome breakdown of the song. You should be proud of yourself!
THE MUSICAL THING HAS CHANGED EVERYTHING FOR ME, for real, I really think that's the lens they were thinking of this through. I'm not familiar with that Green Day song though, I'll have to look it up, sounds interesting.
hahahaha ty I'm glad it wasn't as nonsensical as it felt! I'm just so IRRITATED by the reactions I keep seeing to IGAB -- seems like a split between "we fans should like this song because the girls worked hard on it!!" (what so I'm OBLIGATED to like something because somebody worked hard on it?? people work hard on plenty of ultimately crappy things!) and "man their fans really will eat up any crap they put out" (it's more complicated than that?? I totally get not caring enough to think about it as a song if you're not a fan, but gawd idk of course fans are more likely to come around and that doesn't necessarily mean they're dumb and blind). BUT I MEAN IT'S KPOP FANDOM, WE CAN'T HAVE NICE THINGS.
It was on their American Idiot album, it's kind of old but I loved it when I was in high school, haha.
Oh my god, IKRRRRR. In K-Pop fandom you either get abused by your own fandom (YOU'RE A SHITTY FAN AND YOU SHOULD FEEL BAD HOW DARE YOU NOT LIKE EVERYTHING SUPER JUNIOR DOES EVER!!!!!!) or you get laughed at by fans of other groups who think you're a fucking idiot for liking a weird song by one of your favorite groups. YOU CANNOT WIN. This happens in other fandoms, too, though. I'm a huge Muse fan and man, some people get extremely butthurt if you don't agree with every creative decision Matt Bellamy has ever made, damn. It's obnoxious.
omg like, you're right, this kind of discourse happens in all kinds of fandoms (I've been into a ton of tv fandoms and god knows how many times there's been wank about ~harshing squee~), but I really do think ELFs and Sones take it to this brand new ridiculous extreme. ALL THE RHETORIC ABOUT SUPPORTING THEM, jeez, if I buy an album SM (bc lbr every kpop album I've actually bought has been from SM, I'm that girl) had better earn it with really nice pictures and some new workout jams >:(
This song is...... idk. I still don't think it's a good song but I.... like listening to it now??? It definitely helped me to think of it as a performance piece which seems to be the general consensus from everyone that I've seen, that they're mixed about the song but really excited about performances and judging by the girls' energy from last night's perf I think they'll do it really well. tbh I love the concept behind the song, I've always loved stage gags, I love LOVE that they're trying to use choreo to tell a story, I just wish the song itself had been catchier.
Also this Like in 15 years when somebody decides to Mamma Mia all SNSD's old songs into a musical is like my dream, so many SNSD songs just seem perfect for musicals

I still don't think it's a good song but I.... like listening to it now??? OH MAN YES THIS IS HOW I FEEL. But it's weird because usually when I'm differentiating between the "good" and "I like" categories in pop music terms the stuff the stuff that ends up in the "I like it but I know it's not good" category is like... Rainbow's "Gossip Girl" or Son Dambi's "Queen" (hahahahahahaaaaa), and this song doesn't really fit in the same garbage dump. If that makes any sense?? There are SO MANY interesting ideas behind this song, I'm just not sure it's executed as well as it could have been. I'm not sure if I personally think the issue is catchiness tho -- there are a lot of bits I find super catchy. I can't articulate the issue I have with it though?? It's like... overwhelmingness... but I don't know what they could have done differently. They obviously didn't want to go with a straight pop song so that's out, and they honestly did a lot to seam the different sections together?? But it still doesn't really come across unless you

LMFAO I LOVE THIS SONG SO MUCH, it's so fun!!! i don't care i just want to watch them perform it forever because it's staged really well - the choreography is good and they all look like they're having so much fun, and the weird "dialogue" of styles works really well when you can see them interacting as well? like all the switches don't seem so weird when you're watching it performed. but honestly the switches don't bother me when i'm listening either, like i agree that if it were smoother and flowed more it would be a "better" song but... i don't care. i didn't think i would like them doing ~hip hop~ but i love this because it's not like, "look how badass we are" (like the boys kiiind of was), it's just.. them having a lot of fun wearing stupid outfits with really colorful hair. and i think the premise of the song is a really cool idea! again, it works really well staged (since they're "talking" to each other) and it makes the dance really interesting. but the lyrics do kinda fail in execution since... it doesn't make any sense. O

I LOVE THAT YOU LOVE IT!! and I feel like I'm inching closer to that -- the first time I heard it I was definitely like "I was waiting for THIS????" (and super mad about it because -- as you know lololol -- I was super into the last teaser), but thinking about it and reading the lyrics (WHICH MAKE COMPLETE SENSE TO ME NOW IN A WEIRD WAY) have helped a lot. But I mean idk. Did you like it right away? Can you call a song to which the general initial reaction is "W T F" (followed by some "the more I hear it the more I like it" and some "nope still stupid") a success (like, an experimental success, not a financial one, lbr it'll be shocking if they don't take a couple music banks no matter what they put out)?? That question sounds really rhetorical but I have no answer to it, WISH I DID THOUGH
( ... )
honestly i never had that reaction! there was the teaser that made us really excited and then the one after, and it basically sounds like that one so it wasn't a surprised to me. like at first of course i was kind of "...." but i still liked it, it just took a while for it to settle with me. but yeah i'm really glad that they put it out too! it's different in a fun way and if you don't think about it in terms of "success" then it's not like stressful or anything it's just a good time!
yes exactly it's like they're playing at it in a good way, and the fact that they seem to really enjoy performing it makes it work for me. like whenever i see performances of dalshabet doing have, don't have it's the same way? they are always having SO MUCH FUN and i would've liked the song anyway but that makes me like it sooo much more, because i can really tell that they like it.
Breaking down the content by member seems a little odd because they seem to be playing multiple roles, especially Taeyeon... the persona she sings as in the opening and later in the song seem like completely different people. But I really love her "AHHH NAE WANGJANIIIIM" line because it is so ridiculously dramatic - I don't know how anyone could take that line of hers in the lyrics seriously; it feels deliberately farcical to me. :'D Then again, this is SM and SNSD - they could be playing it straight for all we know. >_>
I did it because my original argument was going to be that the song would be more effective -- maybe -- if they weren't playing multiple roles, but then it sort of seemed distantly possible that they COULD be playing the same roles and I... didn't finish it. I don't know. This song makes me feel muddled.
Then again, this is SM and SNSD - they could be playing it straight for all we know. lol lol lol IT COULD SO EASILY HAVE BEEN INTENDED THAT WAY. For real though, I love it too -- I think that subsection is probably my favorite. I love me some silly melodrama.
Tiffany: IS TROUBLE LOL I like the song (more without the music video and that doesn't happen often!) and I totally agree with you that maybe we should look at it more like a performance song than a song. And SM keeps trying to innovate/push the envelope but I don't think they even know what their goal is. (aka SM Art lol) I do like that there is a lot experimenting esp with Shinee/DBSK (they kind of spared EXO). And honestly, I think that's what really sets their agency apart from YG/etc? They try stuff that might not work (but will still work because THEY ARE SO DAMN POPULAR).
I just watched Soshi's Dancing Queen perf on M Countdown.. SO OLD SCHOOL. I love how they mirrored the concept onto Gee even though it was last minute. WHO DOES THE CONCEPTUAL DIRECTING BECAUSE I WOULD REALLY LIKE TO MEET THEM.
Also I feel like Taeyeon is SO great in IGAB music video/performances. Like she is usually great in MVs but I think IGAB just illuminates how incredibly versatile/talented she is. Insane.
Taeyeon has been KILLING IT in the live performances (you know, all two of them) of IGAB. She's SO into the choreo, you'd never know she's not one of the best dancers. Damn, girl. And her vocals are just so strong and stable nowadays, my jaw was hanging wide open during the entire Romantic Fantasy show. I'm usually a little cringey at her final solo bit of Genie, for example, but she owned it. "The Boys" was a really great concept for Jessica (she had soooo many lines in every song omg) but Taeyeon is really standing out again for IGAB. I'm happy for her.
Yessssss, I think there is a lot of punch in the new song which makes it really fun/powerful (tbh I didn't feel it in The Boys) which I didn't know was her thing but IGAB is totally her element. A+ Queen Tae!
(aka SM Art lol) laughing so hard at this YOU HAVE NO IDEA. SM is so weird about their trying stuff though like -- sometimes I can't tell the difference between formulaic not-trying SM and trying SM. IT TOTALLY JUST OCCURRED TO ME TODAY THAT DANA AND SUNDAY'S SONG LAST YEAR ALSO DIDN'T FLOW LIKE A NORMAL POP SONG??? So it could arguably be a predecessor of this too? But at the time it seemed like the most standardly boring SM title track ever.
OMG WASN'T THE STYLING WITH THE SKIRTS SO GREAT??
She's been amazing! I was watching one of the MR-removed performances and there was this part of me that wished they were, as a group, a little closer to her level in the singing department?? It'd just be awesome to hear the group parts with more harmony/anyone but her and Seohyun singing :/ I mean I'm not ACTUALLY expecting more, it's kpop and everyone actually sounds pretty good?? But it would be cool to hear this song done with nine genuinely strong singers.
