"Jane Eyre (2011)" Costume Exhibit and Review

Mar 25, 2011 01:42

I went to see "Jane Eyre" this week! Apparently it's only in limited release at the moment, but fortunate for me, I am close to one of the few theatres it is at. Even more fortunate is that my boyfriend willingly went with me, and even more exciting - there was a mini exhibit at the theatre featuring costumes from the film. I had no idea this was ( Read more... )

Thanks for a detailed review, I agree on statement, that it is hard to beat series of 2006. I have seen this new version a week ago. I think the main problem with this movie is luck of time - it's impossible to include all necessary scenes from the book into 2-hour movie ( ... )

Thanks for your thoughtful response. I agree with everything you said, about characters and relationships and lack of time... I did notice it was the same "Thornfield" as the 2006 miniseries! Especially with the staircase - it's hard to miss. It looks like they changed the layout, that is, which rooms were used for certain things. Yes, everything looked so beautiful in this version. I was surprised that it was filmed only in 35 mm (16x9) rather than the full widescreen, though (like the 2005 "Pride & Prejudice"). I was disappointed with that, since a full widescreen (75mm or so I think?) would set it apart from the miniseries even more. Oh, well, that's me being very picky.
Yeah, this young Jane was not so pleasant, but it's hard to beat Georgie Henley (from the 2006 version).
I agree - the 2006 miniseries is still my favourite too. (I haven't actually seen the Timothy Dalton version, but I think I should!)

I was disappointed not to see the scene with the "gypsy visit."

Oh no! I was wondering how they would handle it and I guess they didn't handle it at all.

Yes, it was rather sad. I wanted to see whether they'd actually show Rochester as the gypsy or if they would pull a 2006 version and have an actual gypsy. I think that's such a fun scene. It was a shame it was cut.

Hello! I'm glad you like the photos... and the bit with me. ;) I'm afraid I don't take many pics, and I take even fewer of myself.

I hope you can look over my review after you've seen the film! Or in any case, I'd love to hear your thoughts once you see the film for yourself. It was enjoyable, and there were some parts I really liked. (I quite enjoyed Fassbender as Rochester!) But yes, Toby Stephens and Ruth Wilson are the only Jane and Rochester for me.

I swear I will read your entire review, but I just have to say this. I just saw it for the second time tonight, and enjoyed it much more than the first. Last week I was obsessed with finding out what they included or didn't include from the book, and I was also a little disappointed in the lack of passion in some scenes compared to 2006. BUT! This time I was able to concentrate on faces more. Also, the audience laughed much more often this time, so that made me consider several things more deeply. Basically, I recommend seeing it again.

Ok, will read your review now (and contemplate going to see the movie a third time).

I really would love to see the movie again! In fact, I think I will probably want to own the DVD or Blu-ray when it comes out. I don't think I can justify paying to see it in theatres again, though... But maybe.

Thanks for your comment and your interest in my review! I'm glad you enjoyed the film. I'll definitely watch this new "Jane Eyre" again, too.

Oooh, nice N&S icon.

Since I rarely (as in maybe once a year) go to the movies, and since Jane Eyre is my favorite book, AND since it will be forever and a day before it comes out on dvd, I can't help but go see it again. I just happen to have a 3-day weekend so if I don't go Friday, I'll sit at home wishing I was going. :) Well, that or watch The Tenant of Wildfell Hall, which I finished reading last night. Toby Stephens is in that, too.

PS I really did read the review after my original comment, and you did a stellar job.

Aw, thanks for the nice comment about my review! I wasn't sure how concise I was but I'm glad you enjoyed it. :)

It's fun when there's finally a good movie out in theatres, isn't it? I don't like to go just to see anything, so I wait to see what I really want to see. That's nice that you can go see "Jane Eyre" again.

I've started reading "The Tenant of Wildfell Hall" though I've put it aside with other things, especially school-related reading. I'd like to pick it up again once school is out. After I read it I want to watch the miniseries. I find it so funny that Toby Stephens and Tara Fitzgerald (a.k.a. "Mrs. Reed" from the 2006 miniseries) are the lead actors!

P.S. The N&S icon is from thornfield. I absolutely adore her icons - I usually have at least two or three on the go as current "userpics."
