There's the Kitty Norville series by Carrie Vaughn, the first one is Kitty and the Midnight Hour. It's about a werewolf radio DJ with her own supernatural talkshow. There are some vampires, but they are minor characters.
There's also Holly Black's Tithe about faeries, and Melissa Marr's Wicked Lovely and some other books I haven't read yet, also about faeries.
And Sarah Rees Brennan's Demon's Lexicon is supposed to be good, although I haven't read it yet. There are no vampires, anyway, though I think there are demons. :~D
And anything by C.E. Murphy, I'd say, although I've only read Heart of Stone, which is mostly about gargoyles. Kelley Armstrong's books are a mixed bunch, but I like No Humans Involved, which mixes ghosts and real and fake mediums trying to communicate with spirits on a tv show
( ... )
I think I borrowed the first Kitty book off of you - that one was pretty good.
I actually bought Demon's Lexicon because I'd heard good things, but gave up because I wanted to punch three of four leads in the throat. I gave it to little sister, she liked it.
I think I might check out the faerie books and the gargoyle book.
*wracks brain* The only urban fantasy I ever seem to have read is Terry Brooks' "Word & Void" trilogy. It's about a girl living a mostly ordinary life, just with added magical abilities and tree-spirits, a demon showing up to put an end to that, and a crippled "knight" trying to stop the demon. Looking back, I have mixed feelings about these books.
Oh, and as a kid I LOVED "De Griezelklas", a series of books about a young witch who, after being expelled several times for accidentally causing havoc in school, finally gets put into a class full of other mythical/fantasy figure kids, from a tree-nymphs and leprechauns to mummies and kelpies. Predictably, the havoc just escalates from there. But I'm afraid it's only available in Dutch. ^^;
