I saw this on a downloading comm last night and was curious since I hadn't heard of it. I didn't realize it was Kenneth Branagh! Huh.

Yeah, even the KB with one N. *hits self and edits*

There are other series that have featured the character in Swedish. BBC4 are running one of them now contemporaneously with this one. I haven't caught it yet but I hear good things about it too.

I haven't crossposted this to [info]we_3_witches because I don't think this would appeal to my fellow witches

I tried reading one of the books... I think Wallander is just a tad too realistic for my taste. (Not to mention that I found Mankell's style (or at least that of his translator) rather dry.)

I think a German network is another co-producer, so you may be seeing on your idiot box soon anyway. I haven't read any of the books, so I had no expectations but I can see what you mean about Wallander being realistic. It's the same in a way about the lighting and look of the show. It has this edge to it that's unusually real without being dingy. I enjoyed the visuals and Branagh in equal measure but what I most liked was the complexity of the cases and the need to pay attention.

I've watched the first two episodes and I've liked what I've seen. Kenneth Branagh is such a fantastic actor, also the cinematography is *fantastic*.

I've seen the third and last episode now and I was cursing throughout. This was not because it was bad. It was the best of the three. It was because I was really tired and wanted to go to bed but just couldn't drag my eyes away.

I agree about the cinematography. I tried to get across that wonderful quality with "clear, almost transparent" but I don't think that nails it. It's unique though. And no Ikea products in sight. Good show.

They are also showing a Swedish version done in the late Nineties on BBC4 although I haven't seen it. I've heard great things though and plan to try and catch up.

Just saw the last episode now and it is as good as you said! I keep forgetting though that it isn't set in Britain so sometimes I get thrown off but then the narrative quickly reels me back in.

Hi, Inigo! Just reminding you I renamed my journal and that in the process people who listed me as a friend before the rename defriended me in the process (though I didn't defriend them), so if you feel inclined to readd me, please do. I know you're a seldom poster, but I do recall you being a lurker, so you may not have noticed right away.
