Wednesday Night Telly: UK vs. US

Feb 19, 2009 19:39

So nobody watched this week's Chuck or Heroes?

Tuesday night’s are (currently) Lost marathon nights with my neighbour, largely because there’s generally nothing else on in either country. Wednesdays are a different story, at least as far as the US is concerned:

BBC2 ( Trouble in Amish Paradise )

life, grand designs, lost

I saw Heroes, but I haven't seen Chuck yet.

I also haven't seen this week's or last week's Life.

I love Life. That's one show I wouldn't have the patience to wait. I enjoyed this week's more than last.

I saw Chuck and blathered about it on my LJ. Haven't seen Heroes, and actually haven't decided if I'm going to watch it, but have Lost on the DVR, perhaps for today.

Ach! You're right and you've reminded me. I saw you'd talked about it but it was before I'd seen it. I made a mental note to go back and read after I'd posted. Senility makes mental notes dissolve.

I thought Heroes was okay this week but I'm easily pleased.

The winner is Life. Definitely!
at least for me. :)

"The question for me is whether she’s in it more deeply than she wants to be or whether she’s finally getting comfortable"

Oh yes, exactly my thought. And just for this thing alone I'm so curious to see how the writers are going to separate Dani and Tidwell.
I loved so much when the two of them talked about the case, and I think there was a moment in which Crews noticed that Dani was totally on the same wavelenght as Tidwell without being aware of that! I think she's the most amazed when she finds out how much she's in love with him.

The most obvious thing the writers might do is have Dani run from the situation she's letting herself fall into. I expect it will be that or some variant of it.

Just as VM will always be my first true love, even through its sucky and somewhat mediocre moments, Life will always be a winner to me. It's the characters, the interplay, their banter, the wit, the humour, the perfect synchronization of music and storytelling. The lightness they apply in the heavy-handed plotlines. And if you'll allow me some more cheese, I just love that the people behind this show have such a clever sense of humour and how it permeates through everything they touch. All TV shows are made. But this show is crafted.

So, in short, I didn't love this episode. It had its dull moments. No thanks to the missing intro. But Charlie and Danni, Ted, the whole stable of characters and even Tidwell entertain me. I'm also afraid of Mickey Rayburn's reptilian face. And amused by the display of cigarette rolling.

Lost: Being so far removed from the hypercriticism and overspeculation of the online fandom allows me to actually root for Jack. Whether that's a reward or not has yet to be proven. At least, I have my sanity. ( ... )

I adore everything you've said in your first paragraph.

I managed to get a complete copy and the teaser wasn't as visually tight as they usually are, but it was still striking. What moments did you think were dull? I didn't find any but I have such a crush on this show, the bad patches have to be really bad for me to notice. I also have an independent crush on Helen McCrory, so I really liked seeing her. I'm working out all sorts of theories and she's important in all of them, so I hope I'm along the right lines.

And amused by the display of cigarette rolling. You know, I think there was something going on there. I read an interview with Sarah, from before she was pregnant, about how she'd taken up smoking again because she wanted to join everybody else when they went outside to smoke. I reckon that maybe most of the main people on that set do. Helen was pretty expert at rolling her own too ( ... )

Funny you should say that, because I feel like I'm parroting what you said. In fact, I took inspiration from your words and just defined what I liked.

I've procured the full episode but have yet to watch it. I may have tuned in and out of the episode because 5AM was much too early for my brain to process anything. Contrary to the majority on w3w, I actually enjoyed last week's episode and had many LOL moments. Sometimes I'm easy like that.

I'm not familiar with Helen McCrory, but this new twist is fresh and quite intriguing.

Did Claire die after she followed Daddy Shepherd? Unfortunately, these long intervals between seasons don't encourage any Lost rewatches for me. I end up straying to other new shows instead.

Yes, but you said it better!

I'm easy when it comes to this show. I think my only complaints have ever centred on them being either too quick or too slow to get from A to B. I don't mean the pacing, I mean in terms of one being able to follow the thinking. A too slow example was it taking Charlie a whole episode to decide that Jack Reese was being threatened by the man in the car. A too fast example is Rachel going from stabbed on the kitchen floor to holed up in a youth hostel.

We don't know what happened to Claire. She was in Christian's company but we don't know if that means she's dead. The actress wanted the year off, I think, so I don't expect to see her again this season.

This latest episode of Life was my favorite in a while by far! The "thieving prick" line was so fantastic.
One small quibble - I really dislike it when shows portray blind people as having these amazing heightened other senses. My godfather is blind, and he's not walking around all "oh, I smell your apple that you haven't even bitten into yet." But it was just a small quibble, because I actually liked that character otherwise.

It's a stereotype, isn't it? I don't think I've ever seen any show where a blind person isn't illustrating their improved other senses. It's never struck me before, but you're right.
