Because I am planning on showing her, and the AKC breed standard calls for docking, then I am OK with it. And because the litter was bred with the intention of showing, all of the pups were docked. I think tail docking is far more humane than ear cropping and I'm way more OK with tail docking for show/working dogs than ear cropping (which really has no purpose except cosmetic).
From an Australian Field Spaniel blog: "When it comes to spaniels in general, the docking was never cosmetic in the first place. The tail docking in spaniels became a rule as in Old England there was a tax on dogs that were not working dogs. Companion dogs and the sort were taxed, while the working dogs were not. Spaniels were generally poor people's working mates, and as such, to avoid the tax, they were docked until the docking made it to the breed descriptions of spaniels. In other breeds, such as the Doberman, the docking of the tail has been a cosmetic thing."
