Lee Sungmin sat at the huge round table, looking at the faces of the people around him. Everyone was smiling, laughing, dancing or merely talking. There were thousands of tiny lights everywhere, illuminating the reception hall in bright, beautiful white. A love song was playing, and couples were holding each other close on the dance floor.
A plate sat in front of him with half eaten cake. He had enjoyed what part of it he would allow himself to have. He could have easily devoured the whole thing and three other pieces. Siwon always said that Sungmin might someday explode from being so sweet. He exhaled a little laugh and pushed the plate further away from him.
The music changed again and there was a whoop of joy at the fast paced music. Sungmin looked up to see Shindong and Nari on the dance floor, her train swept up and bustled neatly by her bridesmaids. She was laughing and spinning with her new husband and they looked very happy. Sungmin looked around the room, unconsciously looking for Siwon. He was standing near the bar, a wide grin on his handsome face. He was nodding and talking to Hankyung. Heechul wasn’t far away, but he was gleefully absorbed in a conversation with Shindong’s best man, Hyukjae. Whatever it was Hyukjae was saying was making Heechul howl in laughter and the sound carried all the way across the room to Sungmin. He laughed a little, shaking his head at Heechul’s snorting laugh.
And there was Kim Ryeowook, his slight frame easily sliding between tables and chairs. He was holding a glass of wine. His cheeks were flushed, his eyes bright. Sungmin felt the now familiar twinge in his chest when he saw the young lawyer. It had been six months since Kyuhyun had pulled Ryeowook in and kissed him when they won the case.
A part of him wanted to be happy for them, and yet there was still that little part of him that would always love Cho Kyuhyun, and seeing them kiss had felt as if a door had closed permanently. It had been hard to watch the two of them develop their relationship, but Kyuhyun looked very happy now, and Sungmin knew that Ryeowook loved him very much. Sungmin himself had made Kyuhyun miserable for a long long time, and he deserved that happiness.
He watched as Ryeowook made his way across the room towards Heechul, Hankyung, Hyukjae and Siwon. He frowned a little when he realized that Kyuhyun was not there.
Sungmin noticed that Siwon was looking at him, his brow furrowed slightly. Sungmin knew without doubt that Siwon was worried about him. It still surprised him from time to time that Siwon knew him so well. In truth, Sungmin was a wallflower, and weddings were slightly torturous for him. He was shy enough around people he knew, but there were tons of people here he’d never even laid eyes on, and he had found it difficult to leave the table. He smiled and nodded at Siwon to indicate that he was all right, and then he pointed towards the door and stood, motioning that he needed air. Siwon nodded but the look of concern remained.
Sungmin smiled, knowing Siwon would worry until he came over, but he had so many people around him, and Sungmin just needed some air. He made his way quietly past the tables and chairs and headed for the door.
He didn’t have any particular destination in mind, but found himself walking towards a large balcony that looked out over the city. He opened the door and stepped out into the cold air, enjoying the way it seemed to wake him up from the drone of conversation. No one was out here, and he relished the feeling of being alone. He walked to the edge of the iron railing and looked out over the city. He knew he only had fifteen minutes or so before Siwon came searching for him, but this was nice to be out here by himself. He’d been wallflowering in that chair for too long, and he knew he needed to join in the crowd until they could go home and he could be alone with Siwon again.
“I hate weddings.” He murmured. “I don’t even know these people.”
“So you’re still talking to yourself, huh?”
He sighed and closed his eyes, knowing that voice anywhere.
“Yeah.” He said, but didn’t turn to look at Kyuhyun. He hadn’t heard the door to the balcony open, but Kyuhyun had always been good about sneaking up on him.
“You’re not planning on jumping, are you?” Kyuhyun came closer and leaned against the railing.
“Of course not.” Sungmin snorted. “Are you?” He turned to look at Kyuhyun. It had been over a year since he and Kyuhyun had spoken to each other without other people present, and yet here they were, bantering like no time had passed at all. Now that they were alone, Sungmin could feel a slow lump beginning to form in his throat. Kyuhyun looked good dressed in a tuxedo. It spoke volumes that Ryeowook had been able to get him into it at all.
“The security deposit on this thing was insane. No jumping for me.” He chuckled.
“I’m sure Ryeowook will be happy to hear that.” Sungmin turned away, hating the way he sounded bitter. He hadn’t meant to sound like a petulant child.
Kyuhyun did not answer, and the silence stretched out between them, thicker and heavier, growing fur and fangs and claws until finally Sungmin sighed and turned to look at Kyuhyun again. The look in his eyes was unreadable.
“Are you happy, Min?” He asked softly.
“What?” Sungmin blinked at him. Kyuhyun sighed quietly.
“Asked if you if you were happy. With……..him.”
“Yes.” Sungmin answered, surprised at the ease that the answer had been so readily available on his lips. “Yeah, I am.” He smiled a little, imagining Siwon’s face, lit up by tiny white lights and the love that always shone on his face whenever he looked at Sungmin.
“Good.” Kyuhyun said, and for the first time, there was no malice or pain in it. “That’s all I want for you.”
“What about you, Kyuhyun?” Sungmin turned to face him. Now it was here, now that they were speaking truths and being honest with each other, he needed to know. If this was their goodbye, he had to know. “Are you happy?”
“Yes, I am. He’s a handful.” Kyuhyun smiled a little, and then punctuated it with another chuckle. “But then again, I like him that way. He makes me crazy sometimes, but yes. He does make me happy.”
Sungmin nodded. He knew it was true. He’d seen them together, and although that small part of him that still loved this man standing in front of him, he knew it was time to let go. He knew instinctively that Kyuhyun needed to let go too.
He didn’t know how or why, or stop to question it, but he stepped forward and cupped Kyuhyun’s face with his hand. A thousand memories flowed through him of doing this before, a lifetime ago.
“I’ll always love you too, you know that.”
Kyuhyun looked at him. “I’ll always love you too, Sungmin.” He said, although his voice shook slightly.
“I want us to be friends. I don’t want it to hurt anymore.” Sungmin breathed. Kyuhyun reached out and placed his own hand on Sungmin’s cheek.
“It’s a deal. Friends.”
They stood there for a moment.
“So this is it then.” Sungmin whispered. “This is our goodbye.”
Kyuhyun leaned in and pressed his lips gently against Sungmin’s. It was a chaste kiss full of a thousand unspoken things. Sungmin closed his eyes and accepted the goodbye.
Kyuhyun pulled away and backed up a step. “You should go back inside before he comes to get you with his sword and white horse, ready to kill the evil hacker ex boyfriend.” He said, laughing a little at his own joke, although there was a hint of old bitterness at Siwon still there. Sungmin supposed it always would be there, but that was okay.
“You should go back inside before your lawyer comes out and sues me for premeditated wallflowering.” Sungmin smiled in return.
Kyuhyun laughed. “He would, too. Come on.” He said, nodding his head to the door. “I bet Heechul sixty thousand won that Kangin was going to chicken out on asking Dr. Park out, and I don’t want to lose.”
They opened the door and once again the sound and light hit Sungmin, making the calm of the balcony vanish.
“I hope he doesn’t chicken out.” Sungmin snorted. “That guy seriously needs to get laid, and a psychiatrist is a perfect choice for him.”
Kyuhyun laughed heartily and Sungmin saw Siwon walking towards him.
“Hey.” He said softly, taking Sungmin’s hand and squeezing. “Is everything okay?”
Sungmin saw Kyuhyun melt away from them and head towards Ryeowook, who was smiling as Kyuhyun got closer.
Sungmin turned into Siwon’s arms and felt him automatically fold him into a hug. He smiled up at him. Siwon did love him, and Sungmin loved him back. Everything had come full circle. “Yes.” He kissed Siwon softly. “Everything’s perfect.”
